Now that D.ykes has failed to land a job offer from Missouri, South Carolina, or Virginia, he has discovered that he wants to be a C.al B.ear for life. Or until another job opens up elsewhere.

Slight nit...that's 7+ for regular season, not including bowl games...or of course, national playoff games.

So, it's not the lifetime deal he sought - Redrum - 12-11-2015

But it will feel like a lifetime for Kal fans.

Quote:The school announced Thursday that Dykes' extension will run through the 2019 season, with an average salary of $2,825,000 over a four-year period that begins in 2016. That's a boost of $825,000 per year from the $2 million he made this year.

...

The agreement also calls for a $3 million salary pool for Dykes' assistants, an increase from $2,506,000 this season. The previous salary total ranked second-to-last among the league's 10 public universities, according to USA Today, but now it will be sixth.

I look at those numbers and think geez, it's a good thing the c.al people were determined not to give away the store to Dykes. What would they look like otherwise???

While perfectly true in any absolute sense or sane world, in relative terms that is not giving away the store. He seems to be in the lower half of salaries for Pac 12 head coaches. There are some numbers in a c.a.l. blog on the Merc web site - though note that for Dykes the number is an average over the next four year while for the others the numbers are for this past year. They're all probably going up.

Re: Back! For more Yikes - BostonCard - 12-11-2015

Is Dykes even an average Pac-12 coach?  In the Pac-12 North, Shaw and Helfrich have already won the conference, Leach has gone to bowl games twice now and exceeded expectations this year, Petersen was highly successful at Boise State and went to a bowl game with a freshman running back and quarterback and a rebuilt defense (need I say what Dykes' record was with a freshman quarterback?).  Only Anderson at OSU has accomplished less than Dykes so far (and his record in his first year at OSU matches Dykes' first year record at Cal, plus Anderson was successful at Wisconsin).  Ranking the P12N coaches, Dykes would come out 5th or 6th.

In the South, only Mike MacIntyre would rank worse than Dykes (not counting Helton because he has virtually no track record either way).  So, Dykes getting a league average salary appears generous compared to what he has accomplished at Cal so far, which is decidedly below average.

Put another way, Dykes is getting rewarded for leading Cal to a bowl game this year... something that all but two other Pac-12 coaches have done.  In a year where the Pac-12 got 10 teams into a bowl, getting to a bowl is hardly an accomplishment.

Re: Back! For more Yikes - Roberton3 - 12-11-2015

If you compare to the rest of the Pac-12, the new salary is pretty much in line with how the 59ers finished this year.  Three teams finished with worse conference records this year, and two with the same conference record (4-5).  And four coaches have lower salaries.  So if this year was typical, the salary is pretty reasonable.

That said, I think the 59ers will be worse next year (and probably on average in the future) than this year.  If so, then the new salary is too high.

Would be hilarious to have Texas hire away kal's OC.Â
