Ka'imi Fairbairn of UCLA wins the Lou Groza Award - amartinsu13 - 12-10-2015

Reppin the 808.

Glad we blew out UCLA so we didn't have to worry about him. :)

Probably for that tackle on CMac as much as anything. I don't think he had a clutch kick like Conrad's v. USB.

They talked about how he kicked a 60 yarder right before half vs. Cal.

Another reason to be happy he won ;)

He deserved it.  Now he can move on.  Tired of seeing him :)

It bugged me that the Wildcaff clips included the part about "Fairbairn has no chance" (to catch Wildcaff) except he did. Felt to me like false advertising. We're better than that...

Fairbairn didn't tackle McCaffrey. McCaffrey beat Fairbairn (#15) and was tackled by another guy (#18). You can see the play here -- it's highlight #9: http://www.stanforddaily.com/2015/12/10/christian-mccaffreys-top-10-plays-of-the-2015-season/

I think Fairbairn was able to make contact and slow McCaffrey down, though.

I don't think so.  He had a slight angle on McCaffery and nonetheless barely laid a finger on him.

You're absolutely correct, Terry.  #15 was not involved in stopping the play.

That was going to be my post until I saw you already did it.
Fairbairn did make a good effort for a kicker, but only in "hey - nice try kid" kind of way.

I am not quite sure whether Fairbairn really was the best kicker, but mostly because I haven't paid all that much attention to kickers and it's not completely clear to me how one should judge them. Fairbairn does have a decent mixture of kicking a high percentage on FGs, kicking quite a few FGs, also handling kickoffs and putting a lot of those for touchbacks. He's not the best in any of those, but may be the best blend.

He kicked a 60-yarder at the end of a half, right? That's plus being decent at the other things is what wins these sort of awards when there's not one obvious candidate. (Like that Utah punter who is so good that he'll probably be drafted, he's an obvious pick, and dear god am I glad we don't have to play him again, as weird as that is to say about a freaking punter.)

Thanks for the link. That was fun. I didn't mean to say #15 tackled our man, and it still looked to me like Fairbairn slowed him down enough for #18 to get to him. Plus the quote from the same article you linked:

Quote:He wasn’t quite able to outrace UCLA kicker Kaimi Fairbairn — if you were averaging 269 all-purpose yards per game, you’d get tired too — for the score and was dragged down inside the 10-yard line

Nonetheless, I take your points. He didn't "catch" him. I stand corrected on that count. Not sure about "no chance."

I'd like to end on an awesome note. T-shirt says "The home of Intellectual Brutality."
