The 7:30 games completely fucked us over. If McCaffrey were on in primetime every damn game like Henry he'd be running away with these.

Gawd, enough. I'll wait for the Voldemort to emote.

Re: Derrick Henry wins the Maxwell Award - OutsiderFan - 12-11-2015

I honestly thought CMac was going to win the Maxwell Award.

But let's be real here.  He's a Soph.  Even if he has a lesser season next year, CMac will be the undisputed front-runner for the big awards in 2016.  And David Shaw believes he's only going to get better anyway.

That's what we said about Luck. Then RG3 happened.

Re: Derrick Henry wins the Maxwell Award - Leftcoast - 12-11-2015

Low exposure is a tough argument to make.  Sure we had late games but we were on ESPN weekly over the second half of the season and closed with prime time games against Notre Dame and USC.  Toby and Andrew could only hope for that type of platform.

Toby I am not sure about, but Luck had far more exposure.
For two straight years Luck was discussed as the likely #1 NFL draft pick and started 2011 as the Voldemort favorite. He was heavily covered and didn't lose out because he was over-looked.

Mostly, nobody (broadly speaking across the country) was paying much attention to McCaffrey until the und game. That game got a lot of viewership, and McCaffrey wasn't particularly spectacular; though the attention und paid to him helped Hogan kill them through the air. The CCG also got lots of attention, though more afterwards than during because the other two games at the same time had higher rated teams. There's been a brobdingnagian rise in McCaffrey coverage and praise starting around Sunday - which was rather late for votes due Monday.

I've seen that movie before, too.

It's not so much that RG3 happened as that Luck (and the team) had worse years the following year. Luck's YPC and passer rating both declined in 2011 (though his completion % improved), while it wasn't as important to him as to someone like Mariota his rushing declined drastically, and while our regular-season record was the same I don't think the team was as dominant as in 2010 (finished the year #4 in FEI in 2010, #9 in 2011). When you enter the year with really high expectations you need to at least meet them, and Luck didn't.

I remember someone saying at some point in 2011 "Who would've thought that the player we'd miss the most would be Doug Baldwin?" I'm not sure whether it was that we didn't have any good receivers who had chemistry with Luck (Griff, as much as I like him, does not count) or what, but Luck really did decline and the voters punished him for it.

So while McCaffrey will benefit from the extra experience and being the pre-season #1, he'll probably need to break a few of his own records to keep that status all year, while Stanford puts up the same or better record. It's hard to do that, but Mariota pulled it off last year.

Agree with everything you said.  It's going to be an uphill battle.  The regional bias will still be there and not exceeding this year's number will be seen as failure by some.  In Marriota's case he compensated for the regional bias by being indisputedly superior plus he led his team to the national championship game.  Best player on arguably the best team, at least at the voting deadline.  McCaffrey will be stronger and more experienced next year (now that's a scary thought) but lots of things can happen, some good, some bad, some out of his control.  Different team . . . How is Love going to impact things? What will be the effect of a new QB?  A new left side of the Oline?  Should be fun.

Next year, even though I'm excited about the potential starters, I think will be a  "down year" for our team.  We'll have all of our tough games on the road next year.  My way too early prediction would be 9-3.

And if our team isn't in the playoff conversation next year, I'd doubt McC would be in the Voldemort talks (unless he has an even better year).  I could see a Fournette type year: lot of hype at the beginning, losing steam as the team takes losses later in the year.

I'd love to see 11-1 or better next season... but that schedule though... we certainly don't make it easy for ourselves.

I think being the early favorite hurt Luck. As returning runner-up and early favorite, he got a lot of press. As the season wore on, people (and ESPN) got bored with him and started looking for a new flavor of the month to promote.

Yep.  It's one reason January releases rarely win Best Picture the following year.  I know, I know, here come the exceptions.

Re: Derrick Henry wins the Maxwell Award - Treebound - 12-11-2015

+1 CS87,
People got tired of hearing and talking about Luck (not us).  As humble as he was, I think the hype in year 2 hurt him and the east coast voters looked for someone else to anoint.  As Yvonne stated, I too lost faith in the "system."  I still hold a slight hope for Cmac!  It's a sliver.
