Curious to see what happens to Barry Sanders - Mick - 12-11-2015

I was reviewing his season statistics...49 carries, 8 TDs, 6.4 pyc average.  Higher avg ypc, scored 1/2 as many TDs in 1/6 as many carries as McCaffrey.  No slight to the Voldemort candidate, but Barry obviously has running chops.

I'm very curious as to what Barry intends to do next year.  Immediate transfer to Harvard (which has no returning back over 250 yards) and kick off grad school?  Hang in there, hope he gets a shot as a 5'10", 198 pound NFL RB?  Genuinely curious.

I don't think he participated in senior day.

I hope he comes back.  He's a valuable member of the team.  I strongly suspect carrying his name, while loving and respecting his father, has been a burden and caused unpleasant pressure.  I also strongly suspect he is very pleased for McCaffrey.  As is his father.  No record is truly unbreakable and it may be nice to know and like the person who finally does it.

He's just now 21 years old. He's had a few years to perfect his skills without getting beat up, so if he can put on some good muscle, he'll be ready to be productive for a year before heading to the NFL.

Well, I hope he stays too, he seems like a classy guy.  And I would want what's best for him.

What makes you think Barry is going to play in the NFL?  Not to pour cold water, but he is at this point a clear third option in the run game after McCaffrey and Love, and arguably fifth after Wright and Hogan.  His statistics this season are inflated by two 65 yard TD runs (one against OSU and one against UA) that were...blocked for 65 yard TD runs, if you know what I mean.  He didn't record a carry against WSU, UO or ND and, most tellingly to me, Love has been getting carries between the tackles the second half of the season to spell McCaffrey, not Barry.  Barry has been a great teammate and I have so much respect for the challenges he must face playing not just the same sport, but the same position, as his all-time great (maybe best ever) father, but the athleticism gap between Barry and McCaffrey/Love is noticeable, to put it mildly.  Barry doesn't have the size, speed or elusiveness to get on the field for Stanford (two carries in the last four weeks; eight in the last six weeks), and I don't think that leaves him in the conversation for a pro career.

I can't remember a time when Stanford had as much raw running back talent as they do right now.  Barry could and would start at a lot of schools (and most years in Stanford's past), and rack up plenty of yardage.  And he's a class act.  Reminds me of watching Steve Young sit on the bench behind Montana -- the whole time you knew that someday he'd get his chance...

Well, at one point we had Toby Gerhart (Voldemort runner up) starting, and Stepfan Taylor and Tyler Gaffney (each future 1000 yard rushers) backing him up, plus Owen Marecic at fullback.

I don't necessarily disagree, except with the comparison to Steve Young (a hall of famer sitting behind a hall of famer is a bit of a stretch).  But Barry wasn't getting many touches last year or the year before either.  If he was an NFL talent, you don't think the coaching staff would get him on the field for a single carry against UO or ND?  More directly, what do you see in him that suggests NFL ability?  I don't mean to be harsh, but if his name was John Doe RB, I think we'd all see a RB who gets three yards when the play is blocked for three yards and 25 when it is blocked for 25.  Seeing the incredible burst of Love and the burst, elusiveness and tough running through contact of McCaffrey just puts this even more into focus in my eyes.

Unfortunately for Barry his time has run out.

Even next year in his last year, he will be a backup at best.  (As sad as it is for me to type that... I've been one of his biggest fans)

Obviously, Barry has to do what is right for him in this situation. If he finds value in staying on at Stanford and being a good teammate and being available in case of injuries, etc, great. As several have mentioned, he has been the consummate teammate and generally a class act, and represents the university well. And if he decides that he really wants to take that Grad Transfer option to give himself a shot at a starting spot, then he should take that option. He got a Stanford degree, made contributions to the team, supported his teammates. Whatever decision he makes, the future is bright for him.
