Hogan v. Beathard stat comparison - ColoradoTree - 12-11-2015

Both Iowa and Stanford have a run-focused offense this year, and both defenses will presumably focus on stopping the run, but I thought it would be useful to compare the two quarterbacks in a few categories as we look forward to January 1.  As a 3.5-year starter, Hogan obviously has the experience edge over Beathard, a first-year starter (though he had a spot start against Purdue last year and got significant time in the bowl game vs. Tennessee), but I wanted to just look at this year's version of Hogan and see how it compared to Beathard's year.

Traditional Lines

Hogan: 194/283 (68.6%), 2644 yards, 24 TD, 7 INT
Beathard: 202/329 (61.4%), 2570 yards, 15 TD, 4 INT

The passing yards are pretty similar, and put Hogan and Beathard 43rd and 47th nationally, respectively.  Hogan used his yards more effectively, however, getting 24 passing TDs (T-23rd) compared to 15 for Beathard (T-68th).  That comes with 3 extra interceptions, too, making Beathard's TD:INT ratio better, but only very slightly.

Efficiency Stats

Efficiency was another story, however.  Hogan's 68.6% completion percentage was good for 8th in the country, while Beathard's 61.4% was 49th.  Hogan's 170.1 passer efficiency rating is good for 5th in the country, while Beathard's 139.6 was 47th.

YPA (as a proxy for explosiveness and big plays)

Hogan's YPA of 9.3 was 4th in the country (behind only Seth Russell (Baylor), Vernon Adams, and Baker Mayfield), while Beathard's 7.8 was 42nd.  That said, both guys have made big plays throughout the year.  (Beathard's bomb for Iowa's lone TD against Michigan State, for example.)

Sacks Taken

Hogan: 18 (T-63rd most)
Beathard: 22 (T-44th most)

Rushing

Hogan: 79 attempts for 312 yards (3.9 average), with 5 TDs and a long rush of 59 (against Washington State)
Beathard: 87 attempts for 270 yards (3.1 average), with 6 TDs and a long rush of 57 (against Iowa State)

Total QBR

Whatever one thinks of the merits of ESPN's Total QBR rating, Hogan's 85.4 good for 5th in the country and Beathard coming in 25th with 72.5.  Beathard's rushing yards vs. other QBs factor in heavily there, it seems.

Conclusion

Hogan plainly had the better statistical year, at least as far as traditional stats are concerned.  He has been more efficient, scored more, and gets more yards per throw.  Both guys are a threat to scramble and can do damage when ignored in that part of the game.

Some interesting stuff in there.

Just thought I would mention that YPA is not a very good proxy for explosiveness and big plays. Yards per completion is a somewhat better proxy.

On that score, Hogan was at 13.63 for 25th in the country.
Beathard was at 12.72 for 45th in the country.

Other related stats would be number of big passing plays, though there is no normalization there for number of attempts.
Hogan has 36 pass completions over 20 yards for 44th.
Beathard has 37 pass completions over 20 yards for 38th.
[Both tied with several]
Hogan has 13 pass completions over 40 yards for 17th.
Beathard has 8 pass completions over 40 yards for 44th.

Beathard has attempted 25.3 passes per game.
Hogan has attempted 21.8 passes per game.

Thanks to both of you for the stats and analysis.

Bottom line: advantage to Hogan.

Does this Iowa team look much like Wisconsin did leading up to the 2013 Rose Bowl?

By FEI they actually kind of do. Iowa this year is #19 overall, #31 on offense and #24 on defense. Wisconsin (after the rose bowl, they don't have week-by-week numbers easily available) was #15 overall, #30 on offense and #12 on defense. We look totally different though.

Ahh.  I bet, sans WildCaff, we would probably look similar to the 2013 Rose Bowl team.  Which means less probability of a heart-attack game this year.  I envision something of an Orange Bowl-esque performance...hanging close with Iowa for a while before McCaffrey goes super WildCaff on the Hawkeyes in the second half.  (I hope?  Any win would be nice!)
