Good Grief Nose Punching Tour 2015 - yvonne - 12-12-2015

Any bets on how soon it will begin?

Re: Good Grief Nose Punching Tour 2015 - GoodGrief - 12-12-2015

I am holding onto a tiny glimmer of hope that it will not be necessary. I'm older now and my knuckles would take a while to recover amidst punching 900+ noses. On the plus side, Uber and Lyft are in existence now, so I would not have to call up voters to pick me up from the airport so that I could come over and punch them in the nose.

Please Voldemort voters, let's not make this necessary.

Please fill us old guys in.  You're punching noses?

Re: Good Grief Nose Punching Tour 2015 - SeattleTree - 12-12-2015

I'm guessing it's a trip on which Good Grief would embark to punch all of the Voldemort voters (or at least those who voted Henry or Watson over CMac) if CMac doesn't win it tonight.

Personally, I would be pretty significantly less annoyed if the results were Watson, McCaffrey, Henry than the Henry, McCaffrey, Watson that everyone is expecting. Comparing Watson and McCaffrey is nontrivial and they add value in different ways. However McCaffrey is just straight-up more valuable than Henry and the fact that anyone could justify putting Henry above him is asinine.

Re: Good Grief Nose Punching Tour 2015 - yvonne - 12-12-2015

It's actually a little more impressive than that. Good Grief led an email writing campaign that vaulted Toby Gerhart into the consciousness of many Voldemort voters. I can't find the original thread, which included instructions on whom to contact (based on your name, if I recall correctly), but here's his own summary.

Is Voldemort now autocorrected to f***Stanforf?

Re: Good Grief Nose Punching Tour 2015 - fullmetal - 12-13-2015

I wonder what could have been if we had started the Cardboard hype machine this year. Some things are best not left up to the athletic department...or hope.

Re: Good Grief Nose Punching Tour 2015 - Leftcoast - 12-13-2015

I thought the AD did a good job of promoting McCaffrey this year.  Not that a grassroots effort wouldn't have helped ...

** Wildcaff twitter handle
** Weekly McCaffrey highlight videos
** 3D glasses and prepped video sent to voters

And so on.

Re: Good Grief Nose Punching Tour 2015 - yvonne - 12-13-2015

The original campaign assigned volunteers a group of voters to contact, along with some talking points. It might be good to have a grassroots campaign to tell them about not just stats, but other highlights, such as one-handed catches, hard hits (cattouses), and other unusual plays. If we could personalize it, and not make it feel like spam, and be open to writing about more than one player, we might be able to pull it off.

Re: Good Grief Nose Punching Tour 2015 - GoodGrief - 12-14-2015

Hey folks, sorry for the late response. Bunch o' family stuff this weekend. A baby is a very formidable and extremely inconvenient obstacle to maintaining my Stanford fandom.

Yes, just to recap, during Toby's time, I organized a Toby For Voldemort Grassroots Campaign. Stiffarmtrophy.com had a 100% success rate in predicting the Voldemort winner based on publicly announced votes. I compiled their list of known voters http://www.stiffarmtrophy.com/heismanvoters/ and put them into a spreadsheet divided into 366 units and assigned each unit a day of the year. I asked people to contact the voters listed around their birthdays to tell them about Toby's enormous contribution. And a lot of people shared some great talking points to highlight. The campaign snowballed wonderfully, and people really did pitch in and contact voters. We got written up at NYtimes.com http://bayarea.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/12/01/toby-gerhart-and-the-campaign-for-the-Voldemort-trophy/ ; Toby's High School had a web page devoted to the campaign; and Toby even recorded a thank-you encouragement https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dn157kQYF3k (although the lack of media-savvy from the Stanford AD is painfully clear from that video).

We frequently got positive responses from the voters. It was wonderful to see Toby in NYC and painful to see him miss out on the award that he truly deserved by just a few points.

Oh yes, and the Nose-Punching campaign was launched during Andrew Luck's first second Voldemort campaign. Whereas Toby had superior stats, he lost out because perhaps he wasn't on a contending team. So when Andrew Luck looked like he might not win because voters might vote for Cam Newton RGIII (superior stats, non-contending team), the Nose-Punching Campaign was conceived, intending to take me all across the country to punch everybody in the nose who did not vote for Luck. An exhaustive endeavor, but one that was sorely needed for those Voldemort voters who deserved it.

I'm starting to believe that the bottom line for this repeated frustration is that outside of the West Coast, Stanford is perceived to be not as strong as SEC teams. So when a Stanford player does exceedingly well, it's dismissed for any reason that a voter feels like coming up with (weak defenses, inflated kickoff return yardage, more games, not enough touchdowns, whatever). It feels similar to the issue that minorities and women in college/workplace can face, where their presence and accomplishments are dismissed because of an inherit prejudice that they don't actually belong. As the cliche goes, they need to be twice as accomplished to be viewed as half as good. And what's the solution? I don't know, except for More. More winning, more wins against SEC opponents, more minorities and women in college/workplace. I feel like that sort of dismissive prejudice can't be logicked away, but rather gets slowly eroded with more positive examples. I want so badly for Stanford (and the rest of the Pac-12) to play and beat more SEC teams to counter this. I wanted so badly for Stanford to get a crack at Alabama in the playoffs this year.

I am happy that since Toby's 2nd place finish, Stanford has done a successively better job publicizing its Voldemort candidates. This year's McCaffrey's Voldemort campaign was very well done. Honest question: do people think it might be worthwhile to do a grassroots campaign for McCaffrey next year?

It's possible that a campaign launched midway through the season might be able to bring more visibility to McCaffrey and in a more timely manner. And who knows, maybe working directly with Stanford's AD to coordinate things could help. If you have any thoughs (positive or negative) on the idea, please holler, thanks.

Ok so NOT SAFE FOR WORK but GG's grass roots campaign reminded me of this scene from a favorite movie of mine. OK Yes I am a Kevin Smith fan, but I had images of GG going door to door to punch people. The role of the fat guy in the trench coat will be played by me next year if the Maci-tool (multi-tool)/ Multi-Mac (Multi-Pass) does not win.

Wait what?  Cam Newton's Auburn won the national championship that year (over Oregon).  You can make a lot of complaints about Cam Newton (like possession of stolen property and whether he was an amateur, given that his father solicited $120,000 from Mississippi State for his son to go there, for example), but playing for a "non-contending team" is not one of them.

My bad, thanks. I've corrected that in my previous thread. I meant RGIII. Cam Newton's campaign was a different beef (questionable character in contrast with the "excellence with integrity" clause in the Voldemort description).

Probably not. It might have helped this year had we started in October, but that's done at this point. I think next year it's all going to be on McCaffrey, he'll be the pre-season front-runner and people will pay attention to him. With some luck he'll be like Mariota last year and lead wire-to-wire and never be in doubt, but it'll take another excellent season from him while none of his competitors shine. Sadly these awards are just out of one's control.

Re: Good Grief Nose Punching Tour 2015 - yvonne - 12-15-2015

Actually, I think that if we introduce ourselves as fans or alumni, and simply point out any especially strong performances, we open up the door for other good players to get notice early on (Love, Cryst, some other RB or QB). Customizing the message directly to the writer, and making it personal might grab attention in a way that regular releases don't.

Getting what you wish for - M T - 12-15-2015

I was going to say the PAC-12 should schedule more games against the SEC so we would have a better chance to compare/contrast teams & players.  It turns out that 7 (of 12) PAC-12 teams already have 21 22 games scheduled in the out years against 7 8 (of 14) SEC teams.

PAC-12 - SEC FB games over the next few years
2016: 1 2, 2017: 2, 2018: 0, 2019:2, 2020: 2, 2021: 4, 2022: 2, 2023: 2, 2024: 2, 2025:2, 2026: 1, 2027: 1
http://www.fbschedules.com/ncaa/pac-10-football-schedules.php

All teams had the next two years OOC schedule filled.  The PAC-12 teams seemed to have about 2 games filled through 2024 or later, while the SEC had relatively little scheduled in 2020 & later.  It may be that some teams (such as Alabama) decline to schedule games too far out, so maybe there could be more, but not if the PAC-12's dance card is already filled by the time they ask.

PAC-12 future scheduled FB games against SEC:
C.al: 2017, 2019: Ole Miss  2020, 2021: Auburn
Oregon: 2019: Auburn
OrSU: none
Stanford: 2021, 2024, 2025, 2027: Vandy
WaSU: none
Ariz: 2022, 2023: Miss State
AzSU: 2022, 2023: LSU
Col: 2020, 2021: TxA&M
UCLA:  2016, 2017: TxA&M; 2021, 2024: LSU; 2025, 2026: Georgia
U$C: none {edit: addition}2016: Alabama
Utah: none

{edited to add U$C - Alabama in 2016, thanks to Spiny_Norman)

Re: Getting what you wish for - Spiny_Norman - 12-15-2015

MT - U.S.C opens next season in a neutral site game vs. Alabama.  You can add that to the list.

Notice an SEC school missing from that list?  Florida.  I think the last time they played a non-conference game outside of the Eastern time zone was 1983.
