An odd NFL draft take - washingtonismoney - 12-13-2015

Bob McGinn, a Packers beat writer, annually serves as a conduit for anonymous personnel guys giving their takes on the NFL draft. Here's this year's take: http://www.jsonline.com/sports/packers/early-look-at-the-nfl-draft-b99632297z1-361697971.html

What makes this edition weird is the sole Stanford player discussed, in passing. My guess is literally no one on this board will cotton on to the player in question without clicking first.

Re: An odd NFL draft take - Langdude - 12-13-2015

I am guessing he meant Cajuste.

Gotta be Garnett.

I see what you did there. . . .

Who'd a thunk.

Re: An odd NFL draft take - Mick - 12-13-2015

CBS likes Murphy (66th overall) in the 2nd/3rd round, Garnett (108) not until the 3rd/4th round, Cajuste (135)in the 4th round, Hogan (179) in the 5th/6th round.

The rest of the Stanford free agents and their (rankings out of the top 1,000 prospects):

Reed Miller (411)
Kevin Anderson (429)
Kodi Whitfield (459)
Brennan Scarlett (719)
Remound Wright (776)
Luke Kaumatule (836)
Ronnie Harris (848)

Re: An odd NFL draft take - fullmetal - 12-13-2015

Quote:"The best running back in the country can't come out," one scout said in reference to LSU sophomore Leonard Fournette. "So the top two are big boys. They put up yards and are productive in all phases of the game. You can't go wrong with them."

So now I know that some scouts are just dumb, blind squirrels...(provincial, perhaps)

Methinks Garnett would be a steal in the middle rounds.

Re: An odd NFL draft take - TrumpCard - 12-13-2015

This list also includes Martinez in the 4th round (132).  Shittu is omitted entirely though, which is odd for a player who was recognized as 1st team all conference.  I would have thought I'd see him somewhere on the list of the top 1,000 players, even if not predicted as a draft choice.  So maybe it's just an oversight.

Shittu is no Cotton...

Re: An odd NFL draft take - TrumpCard - 12-14-2015

Looking back, the 2013 roster was absurdly talented.  If these draft predictions come true, then 8 offensive starters and 10 defensive starters either got drafted or have played in the NFL.  That's not counting Mauro, who was playing starter level snaps, not to mention Martinez, Murphy, and Garnett, who were coming into their own and getting some playing time.

There are people who can't accept the fact Guards can be drafted high.  Those same people projected DeCastro to be a 2nd round pick.  He was #24.  I'm guessing Garnett will be taken around the same time, and maybe by the Steelers too!

Same happened with Mike Iupati, OG taken in first round by the Niners.  He was a multi-year All-Pro.

I think the Steelers need a C who can stay healthy... ::)

Most of what I have read projects Garnett as late first round.  This one is the outlier.

Late first versus second round is not a large miss by any stretch.  Jonathan Martin had been projected as a late first rounder and wound up going 42nd.

Generally speaking though, guards are not as commonly drafted in the first round as left tackles.  Garnett will be drafted but his position will depend on team needs.  FWIW, the last two interior offensive linemen who won the Outland award were drafted in the seventh round (Greg Eslinger, C, 2005; Aaron Taylor, G, 1997).  Last year, the top Guard prospect was Laken Tomlinson, taken with the 28th pick of the first round).  Two guards were taken in the second round, and three in the third.
