Stanford's NCAA team championship streak hits 40 years -
terry - 12-13-2015
The men's soccer championship extends Stanford's streak to 40 straight years with an NCAA team championship. It's nice to get that out of the way early in the year. It's nerve-wracking when the continuation of the streak comes down to the last few spring sports.
The next longest active NCAA championship streak is UCLA's streak of 14 years. They've already won a championship this year in men's water polo.
The next longest NCAA championship streak in history is U*S*C's streak of 19 years from 1959-60 to 1977-78.
The numbers of NCAA team championships for the leading schools are:
113Â UCLA
108Â Stanford
100Â U*S*C

The above was why I was glad to see the Toejams flame out in the WVB tourney quarterfinals in such a spectacular way.
Short version: fall behind #9 Kansas 2-0, getting blown out the first set then losing a late lead in the second. Win the next two sets in fairly convincing fashion (although nearly blowing a late lead again in set #4), then lead the 5th set 13-9 - and never score another point.
While it would've been nice to have a Pac-12 representative in the Final Four, I didn't want $C getting any closer in the championship count.

This is also the first NCAA championship by a Stanford men's team in nearly 5 years, since the gymnastics team won in spring 2011.Â

I'm thrilled.
And I would rather see Stanford win this game than see a Stanford player win an individual trophy.

No offense, but I think that is a false dilemma.

You are absolutely correct. I would rather that Stanford were making room in its trophy case for both. Alas, not this year.
I guess I'm expressing two things: that team success is the primary goal, and that it is easier to express indignation after some apparent slight than to express appreciation after success.

It's interesting that schools from Ca.lifornia hold the top 3 positions. Is it because of the warm weather that attracts a lot of athletes and makes for good programs in multiple sports? I believe the next closest school has 50 or something around that number.

On to the Rose Bowl! Decimate Iowa and put an exclamation mark on this season. Hoo-aah!!!

Yes, there's a major gap after the top three schools on the NCAA team championship list:
113Â UCLA
108Â Stanford
100Â U*S*C
 51 Oklahoma St.
 47 Penn St.
 43 Arkansas
 43 LSU
 43 Texas
 40 North Carolina
 36 Michigan
I suppose warm weather is part of the reason for the success of Stanford, UCLA, and U*S*C. But of course, other schools have warm weather also, but haven't had the success of Stanford, UCLA, and U*S*C. Arizona St. has 23 championships, Arizona has 18, C.al has 34, Florida has 30, Florida St. has 7, Alabama has 10, Georgia has 28, South Carolina has 3, Mississippi has none, and so on. So warm weather isn't a complete answer.

I think the larger component is breadth of offerings. Especially in women's sports.

Stanford and UCLA have done well in women's sports, but U*S*C was late to the party and has been playing catch-up.
NCAA women's team championships
46Â Stanford
39Â UCLA
29Â North Carolina
25Â LSU
23Â Texas
21Â Maryland
19Â Georgia
17Â Florida
16Â U*S*C
14Â Connecticut
In men's sports, UCLA, Stanford and U*S*C still are the top three, as they are on the overall list, but in a different order.
NCAA men's team championships
84Â U*S*C
74Â UCLA
62Â Stanford
51Â Oklahoma St.
42Â Arkansas
34Â Michigan
27Â C.al
26Â Yale
24Â Iowa
24Â Indiana
Breadth of offerings is a factor, but it's not a complete answer. The schools offering the largest numbers of NCAA varsity sports, besides Stanford (30 NCAA sports), include Ohio State (32), Penn State (30), Michigan (29), C.al (27) and North Carolina (27). (There may be others in this range -- I didn't check all of them.) Those schools are well behind Stanford on the list of total championships. Offering a lot of sports is not enough to put these schools at the top of the list.

So Oklahoma State has no women's championships? How many of theirs are wrestling?

Oklahoma St. has 34 NCAA wrestling championships, which is two-thirds of their total. That's the most championships in one sport for any Division I school. Oklahoma St. has another 10 championships in men's golf. So that's 44 of their 51 championships in just two sports. They have no championships in women's sports.

It would be interesting to do a deeper analysis on any commonality on why UCLA, US.C and us have had the most success in team championships
