The true freshmen who redshirted -
TrumpCard - 12-13-2015
The team obviously got some great contributions from true freshmen this year. In addition, there are a bunch of guys redshirting who the team will need next year. Have there been any reports on how those guys are progressing? Wilson, Scarlett, Barton, and Buncom were all consensus 4-star recruits and will have an opportunity to seize a big role. Plus, the DL will be as thin as ever, so it would be very helpful to see Jackson or Annan ready to compete. Williams, Toohill, Whiteside, and Chaffin may also have opportunities to provide depth. It's really a time of opportunity for the younger guys, and I would love to hear how they are progressing.

By all accounts, Casey Toohill has been progressing quite well and should have regular playing time at OLB next year. The only other player that I have heard impressive things about was Buncom a few months ago. Some posters have also mentioned Dylan Jackson as being an impressive prospect.

Seems like every year some 4 star recruits progress as expected, some don't. Desire? Over hyped? What?

Opportunity is a factor too. When there is a lot of depth at a particular position, why burn a red shirt for a talented player who won't get a lot of playing time?

Terrence Alexander played as a true freshman, while both Alameen Murphy and Alijah Holder redshirted. But this year, Holder has been the best of the three, and Alexander arguably the worst. On the other hand, we were all hoping Bobby Okereke would be ready to contribute as a redshirt freshman, but no such luck...
Anyway, I fully expect Buncom and Toohill to contribute next year. I hope Jackson will, but my expectations are a bit lower there.

I didn't mean that. I mean, after a redshirt year some are ready and some are not, even with similar high school ratings. Our recent QB recruits are a good example.

Did you expect our young QBs to unseat a multi year starter and one of the best QBs we've ever had?

No. I was thinking of Nottingham, others, plus 4 stars who never became major contributors. Just musing, really.

Very good reports on Dylan Jackson, yes, and Toohill.Â
This will be a helluva defensive backfield.Â

The 2015 redshirts I'm most curious to see play:
Wesley Annan, Sean Barton, Frank Buncom, Harrison Phillips.

We've seen Harrison, although briefly. Looked good to me.

Phillips will be a junior next year. He will have to apply for a medical hardship waiver, which he should get. But since he participated in competition this year, he isn't automatically considered to have redshirted.
Either way, though, he will not be a redshirt freshman. I am really looking forward to having Thomas and Phillips anchoring our line for the next one to three years (probably two; I'm not seeing Thomas sticking around for a fifth year).

Phillips did receive a medical redshirt one week after the injury. He still has three years of eligibility.

Not post-ACL surgery.

True, but if he's not 100% by Fall camp he never will be.

Are we sure of that? Even though an ACL tear is incapacitating and would have left him out of the season, I think there needs to be documentation that he did not, in fact, participate in subsequent contests as well as physician documentation of his ongoing rehabilitation efforts, etc.

Not necessarily. Skov, for instance, took a while to get back to 100% after his tear. IIRC it was basically an entire season being slightly below speed.

I don't know this for sure, but my suspicion is Skov's injury was more serious than the Phillips injury. Skov had more than one ligament tear did he not?Â

Correct, Skov suffered the dreaded unhappy triad (O'Donoghue's triad), also known colloquially as a blown knee. He suffered ACL and MCL tears and (likely) a meniscus injury (most commonly the lateral meniscus). On top of that he had a tibial plateau fracture.

That's my memory as well. Skov had a near catastrophic injury. Phillips' is just your average, run of the mill, God-damn-that-hurts variety.
