OTish: Ultimate frisbee - BostonCard - 12-15-2015

http://fivethirtyeight.com/features/a-plea-for-more-frisbee-data-from-a-u-s-ultimate-coach/

As I recall, Stanford has had a pretty good ultimate frisbee team.  (Current rankings, Stanford men are 19th, women are 5th: http://ultiworld.com/college-rankings/).  The analytics would seem to be a natural thing to introduce, as would the GPS bra that the soccer team is using.

Re: OTish: Ultimate frisbee - Papa John - 12-15-2015

When I was an undergrad in the early 1980s my roommate was on the Stanford men's ultimate team. IIRC, they won the first collegiate ultimate national championship. I seem to recall it was back east and around Mother's Day, but I could be conflating (or creating) memories.

Anyone out there care to substantiate or repudiate?

I think that Stanford used to host an ultimate tournament on Mother's Day weekend.  I still have a (well-used) disc from the 1983 Mother's Day tournament.

Re: OTish: Ultimate frisbee - 82 Card - 12-15-2015

I have a hard time accepting competitive Frisbee. Back in my day, Frisbee was the favorite activity of stoners on the front lawn of the high school. Turning it into a national championship doesn't seem right.

I don't know if I could substantiate Papa John, but when I played ultimate at Tech in the early '80s a graduate transfer student (pretty sure he was EE) who had "played for Stanford" showed up at practice one day and he was incredible.  We won the 1985 intramural title easily, pretty much because of him. Can't remember his name. Jim, John or Scott Somebody?  I think it was Jim. I was one of the so-called gunners.  Zero talent, but well-conditioned and I could catch the disk.  Just go long and be prepared...he could put it anywhere he wanted from any distance.

Re: OTish: Ultimate frisbee - rudruff - 12-15-2015

Yeah, at some point ultimate changed from stoners to failed D1 cross country runners.

Re: OTish: Ultimate frisbee - fullmetal - 12-15-2015

Ultimate Frisbee is quite athletic, more so than many other sports.  It's like soccer with the disc skills similar to basketball handles to throw.  The catches are every bit as athletic as wide receiver catches in football.  Team formations can be set plays with each throw, and the routes/formations are much like basketball inbound set plays.  The large field puts a premium on conditioning as well, and skilled throwers can really put some zip on their throws.

Re: OTish: Ultimate frisbee - Hey - 12-16-2015

A-ha, finally a topic I'm in expert in having been a college women's coach for two years.

It is a very demanding sport that takes getting used to even for people in shape because of the constant cutting and the 14 hours of gametime during a weekend.

The hard part in getting it to grow is getting tv networks to pick it up.  The reasons given are there isn't a good place to put commercials, and it's hard to take seriously because the games are mostly self-officiated.  I was surprised to hear the Olympics picked it up before tv did.
