I always go with an old saying about performance reviews - if there are any surprises, then that's your fault for not getting feedback and it's your manager's fault for not either getting it or communicating it.

Yep. I believe most people realize when they're not cutting it unless they are deluding themselves.

You know who doesn't get it? Parents. I coach middle school basketball, and when it comes to making the team or not, starting or not, getting playing time or not, the players almost always get it. They see what's going on and understand everyone's roles on the team. Parents? A whole 'nother story.

Agree 100%. A friend of mine coached my son's middle school football team and had a miserable experience. The following happened:
* Received the stinkeye from his best friend, presumably because his son was taken out. His son had asked to be taken out because he had an injury. The dad tried to talk his son into coming back into the game.
* The son of a friendly couple was soft, overweight, very unathletic, very fat. Parents had pressured him to be on the team. He played every other series on defense, DE (touch football), but was literally turning his back by mid-third quarter. His mother mercilessly pilloried the coach.
* A father demanded that his mildly athletic son played WR, claiming that they had been running routes all season. First route run for the son in the first game, pick six. The next year, the father expected his son to play football on the freshman team, third day of practice, severely broken leg, in a cast for six months.
* Near the end of the season, a father had been particularly persistent about his son getting additional playing time. During the next timeout, the coach motioned over another dad and said "Bill, Bob wants more playing time for his son. It's going to come out of your son's playing time. You two figure out how much is appropriate. If you can't agree, don't bother me." And left the two of them with shocked expressions on their faces.
Youth sports are great, aren't they?

Not a particularly great saying, no?Â
Still don't know who's fault it is....

I was assuming that everyone here was familiar with the "Matheny Manifesto" but then again I didn't want to make an "ass out of u or me," so here's a link:

I was not familiar with the manifesto, but there's a lot of good sense there. Shame that parents have to be told this in no uncertain terms.
