Can someone who knows this program well help me understand why there's been a bit of a fall-off the last 10 years or so?
Thanks, nice summary... -

for those of us who go only to an occasional game, good to get this overview...
for others, who follow closely and are more deeply knowledgeable, likely what they already knew

Look at the last 10 years or so the MLB draft. Fewer HS kids in the top 5 or so rounds. The MLB teams rather draft college kids. It's a reversal of years ago when the top players went pro out of HS and Stanford kept the players they signed. Now Stanford has to compete against these outstanding players.Â
Just one reason of course. But not a small one.
Example would be Hooper's brother would have been a first rounder now at ucla.

My memory is hazy on the details, but I've been following the team somewhat off and on over the last (*gulp*) 12 yrs...
A combination of injuries, whiffing on recruits, and some amount of assistant coaching turnover has happened lately, as well as a rise in the level of play seen at other programs. I just don't feel Stanford has had enough elite hitting talent over the last few years, and that definitely hurts when the pitching has been less-than-stellar. I've been under the impression that the program tends to recruit better pitchers than hitters, but I've only built that impression based on what I've seen from on-field performance.
I think this program misses former associate head coach Dean Stotz ('75) a lot more than most casual fans would have initially recognized (he retired after the 2012 season). Ryan Garko ('03) replaced Stotz, but left after only one season to spend more time with his family. How can anyone expect to replace Stotz's experience? People do murmur about the game having passed by Marquess and Stotz, but I don't have a good enough grasp of college baseball to verify such a thing.
But let's not get too maudlin--here's a recap of the last few seasons:
2015 - Not selected (24-32 overall)
2014 - Super Regional (lost to Vandy)
2013 - Not selected (32-22 overall)
2012 - Super Regional (lost to FSU)
2011 - Super Regional (lost to UNC)
2010 - Regional (lost to New Mexico, then Fullerton)
2009 - Not selected (30-25)
2008 - CWS semis (lost to Georgia)
2007 - Not selected (29-28)
2006 - Super Regionals (lost to Oregon St.)
2005 - Regionals (lost to Baylor)
2004 - Regionals (lost to LBSU)
2003 - CWS finals (lost to Rice)
2002 - CWS finals (lost to Texas)
It's not an impossible task to get Stanford back into the tournament every year. I do think last year's 24-win season was a shocker, but a decimated pitching staff will do that to you. Hope springs eternal.

Rather surprised to hear Marquess say that due to the depth in the infield, two of last year's freshmen who were thrown into the fire due to injuries, Branton and Kuet, will also have to find time in the outfield to get their bats in the lineup. ???
Also, towards the end, when I presume Marquess was asked about retirement (off microphone), he said something to the effect that other coaches retire "when it isn't fun any more" or when "their bosses tell them it's time." He said he still has the energy and it's fun, so he's still going, as long as bosses are ok with it.

Garko is a coach now in the Doidger organization, AA level.Â
I posted this elsewhere last year but about the most Super Regionals last 15 now 16 in College Baseball.  Maybe I can find the details.Â

Glad you enjoyed it! We win the opener 2-0 with significant contributions from the frosh starter and the frosh cleanup hitter! Game 2 should start soon!

Beck is a freshman? Was that his name? Wow. What a game he pitched.
Re: 2016 baseball preview -

Yes, Tristan Beck is a freshman. 6.1 innings pitched, gave up 2 hits, 1 walk, 2 Ks, retired 11 in a row at one point.
Game 2 just underway, first pitch was 4:21pm. Fullerton changed unis for game 2... ???

A sweep. Great pitching despite missing 2 starters. Fun day at the ball park.

I didn't quite catch what the announcer said about freshmen batting cleanup on opening day (Hoerner was the second? second in a row?), but Beck was the second frosh starter since Mussina in 1988 (Cal Quantrill did so in 2014).

We've got to do something about the autocorrect. When we can't even type the first name of Stanford pitcher Quantrill, something is very wrong.
This kid deserves better:
