Let the complaining begin. -

At ESPN, Chris Low has an article listing the top 10 juniors or RS sophs for next year, based upon pro potential.
http://espn.go.com/college-football/story/_/id/15355662/college-football-top-juniors-dominate-next-year-nfl-draft
Our fave, McCaffrey didn't make his list though does appear in the secondary list of "Ten more who could jump into the top 10" (listed alphabetically)
On the one hand, broadly speaking, it seems pretty obvious that McCaffrey is one of the 10 best juniors for next year in a broad sense.
On the other hand, it is my impression that smaller RBs don't seem to be drafted very highly - at least not top 10 highly. Are there enough examples that make this untrue?

LaMichael James, 2012, 5th RB taken, 2nd round pick. 5'9", 195. I'll keep searching...
Are you talking top 10 overall picks, or top 10 RBs?

Barry Sanders, the guy whose record Christian broke, 3rd overall pick, 1989.
Perhaps Chris Low also took into account it is unlikely he will make himself available for the draft? (OK, doubt that too...)

Darrin Nelson?

It will be interesting to see how McCaffrey does as a pro. You would think his vision will translate well, but you never know.

Reggie Bush #2 overall pick. I can't think of a better comp than that one.

Widely considered a bust, so not really one you want to be making.

I haven't looked at the article, and this may not be relevant but McCaffrey wasn't in that writer's Voldemort top 3.

Well, this hypothetical college draft has McCaffrey #2 overall (behind Deshaun Watson).

Doesn't really matter whether it's a comparison one wants to make, it seems to be the most relevant one listed here. The two seem to be about the same size, similar roles (though McCaffrey seems to carry a heavier work load), and similar levels of achievement/notoriety.
LaMichael James is more what I was thinking of - a good small back who didn't get drafted anywhere near the top 10. On the other hand, McCaffrey is both bigger and better.
I am afraid that both Barry Sanders and Darrin Nelson (both smaller than McCaffrey) are so long ago they are probably not particularly meaningful for projecting how the NFL feels about smaller backs today.
To counter my own premise, I see McCaffrey is listed as 6'0'' and 202 lbs. If that is more or less accurate, he is not that small a back - particularly if you project him putting on some pounds by mid-NFL career.Â

There is some evidence that harbaugh objected to the James pick...that it was Baalke who drove that selection.

I see a lot of Brian Westbrook in McCaffrey.

Mac is in a class by himself but needs the right system and the right OC to get the most out of him in the League. He'll be a must double cover in the slot, can be a decoy and can be a third down back. I hope he doesn't run back kicks in the pros. Plus I reckon he'd be an All American safety if moved to defense if a coach was stupid enough to do it. He would have been one of the greatest single wing TB's ever. He's Robert Redford in The Natural. Unfortunately the combination of late night games, writers reverse racism and the lukewarm Voldemort campaign that the Department will run this season will cost him another Voldemort. It's already been awarded to Woods.

Maybe he meant Deshaun Watson? They both start with a "W".

Well, I thought he might mean Leonard Fournette since he seems to be the most popularly listed front runner for 2016. However, I couldn't see a name connection.
