Luck - stanfan - 06-29-2016

Andrew has signed a deal through 2021.  Numbers not yet reported.

Re: Luck - DC 86 - 06-29-2016

6 years, $140 million with $87 million guaranteed. Largest contract in NFL history.

Re: Luck - JohnR34231 - 06-30-2016

Given that he is the intellectual that he is, I wonder if Luck feels bad about contributing to income inequality.

Re: Luck - FarmBoy - 06-30-2016

Part of me is surprised that he didn't leave more money on the table to enable a better team around him. As someone who came from relative wealth, I'd thought maybe he would realize the difference in his personal outcome of earning $15M a year vs $24M is not significant but the actually $5M-$10M spent on the roster might make the difference in progressing a round in the playoffs.

On the other hand, maybe he realized that with Grigson and Irsay at the helm, there's little evidence they would use additional money effectively so why not take the money and run?

I hope he's able to get a strong enough cast to at least be competitive in the playoffs.

Re: Luck - dabigv13 - 06-30-2016

Sounds like he left a lot of money on the table as is. I'm just dissapointed hes still playing for that execrable organization.

How do you figure? Have you seen analysis on that? Just curious how much more he could have gotten. Would it have meant a much longer commitment to the team?

Well, as someone who is in the "99%" I can confidently tell you that Luck signing such a large contract has not made me any worse off than I would have been had he taken less money, so he shouldn't feel bad.

I think that's a ludicrous assertion:
- Largest contract in NFL history
- $22M more guaranteed money than any other player in the NFL
- Over $24M/year for the first 4 years ($97M total).  I think that's the highest salary of ANY player in the league

Yet asserted it remains, and not just by dabigv.  Jim Irsay acknowledged Luck left money on the table.  And this ESPN report (http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/16621472/andrew-luck-indianapolis-colts-87-million-guaranteed-contract-letdown-future-quarterbacks), noted a few points as to how Luck could have made more.  In fact, many folks thought Luck's contract might actually be fully guaranteed, given his importance to the organization, his youth, and his skill level.  Certainly, had he been a free agent this offseason, he could have commanded more money.  See http://www.indystar.com/story/sports/nfl/colts/2016/06/29/andrew-luck-signs-5-year-contract-extension-colts/86522810/. If he'd said, "$27M/year or I'm walking," or "I want every last penny fully guaranteed," that's tough for the Colts to walk away from. Because some beleaguered franchise would have absolutely ponied up that money in free agency.

Heck, with wage inflation, we see a new "largest contract in NFL history" every few years.  Just because he got the most doesn't mean he couldn't have gotten more.  He's special.  The league knows that.  Irsay knows that.

Re: Luck - fullmetal - 06-30-2016

There may have been a private agreement that Irsay needs to spend that extra money on OL.  Luck doesn't want to have to medically retire at the end of this contract...!

Or halfway through it...

???

Re: Luck - dabigv13 - 06-30-2016

Yes, Colorado Tree posted the ESPN article I read. It's a lot of money certainly, but could (should?) have been a lot more. A guy like Luck doesn't come around frequently.

Actually, I agree with you, but a lot of people don't. Surprising how many people feel that economics is a zero sum game.

Re: Luck - akiddoc - 07-04-2016

Some agents are upset that Luck settled for "so little."

Re: Luck - Phogge - 07-04-2016

As Madden says it's all about the money. Thankfully a few pros are active with their free time to actually be involved with a foundation.
