New Field-Rushing Policy - stupac2 - 08-29-2016

I hadn't heard about this before, and it's at the end of the What's New page athletics e-mailed out earlier, so I thought I'd share:

Quote:The Pac-12 Conference has instituted a post-game field-rushing policy. Even more, Stanford has implemented a security plan to effectively prevent spectators from rushing the field and throwing objects onto the playing surface.

In the event that field-rushing activities occur within 60 seconds after the completion of a game, an automatic fine shall be assessed to the host institution. If the visiting team, staff members, working personnel, and game officials safely exit from the field during the 60-second time period, the Pac-12 commissioner may waive the fine.

An automatic fine of $25,000 will be assessed for an institution's first offense of field-rushing activities that occur within 60 seconds after completion of a game, $50,000 for a second offense and $100,000 for a third offense.

Please help us keep you safe at Stanford Stadium.

This seems like a reasonable compromise, if you can enforce the 60-second wait.

Re: New Field-Rushing Policy - fullmetal - 08-29-2016

You could have a big 60-sec countdown clock on display to rush the field...would hurry everyone else off the field who wouldn't want to be there :p

Re: New Field-Rushing Policy - TreesAndBirds - 08-29-2016

Does the rule apply to the band also  :)

Would have been nice to have had it in effect in '82.

Slightly more seriously, I could see the band doing a countdown. Could be a lot of fun.

Re: New Field-Rushing Policy - terry - 08-29-2016

So, Stanford fans shouldn't rush the field if we beat Kansas State?

Re: New Field-Rushing Policy - 82 Card - 08-30-2016

This could result in some interesting visuals right when the TV crew is wrapping up. I assume rushing the field would only be an issue when the visiting team loses. You will have the sight of the losing team turning tail and running at the sound of the final whistle.

Re: New Field-Rushing Policy - donkey687 - 08-30-2016

I think this has been partially enforced in the past.  For Notre Dame last year, the security guard in our section blocked entrance onto the field for a period of time. It may not have been a full 60 seconds but there was enforcement for a period of time and then the floodgates were opened.  The policy seems like a good compromise. You want player safety, but you also want those Notre Dame Conrad Ukropina on the shoulders moments.  Those are pretty special for everyone involved.

It's such a good policy that it's shocking it was actually chosen.

Maybe in that instance there should be a 60 second wait to rush back to your tailgates... :D

The 60-second drive to get off the field - Redrum - 08-30-2016

Can the visiting team call a time-out to stop the clock?

Or in big game.  We've rushed memorial stadium after a win, and cal fans have rushed the field there after a loss!

I noticed that too, but I couldn't tell how much it was an actual policy.  At least in my section they tried to keep the door/gate to the field closed, but since it was just one security person, he/she was helpless against all of the people jumping the fence.  After a minute or two, though, he/she relented and let people through the gate.  I can't tell if that was an attempt to keep it to a trickle for the first minute, or if it was just giving up when stopping people became futile.

I can think of one case where they Cal fans rushed their field 12 seconds before a loss!

Re: New Field-Rushing Policy - CrazedZooChimp - 08-30-2016

The AD/University should happily pay $25,000 to keep the atmosphere of their home games as enthusiastic as possible. Field rushing moments tend to also be moments that encourage people to keep coming to Stanford football games.

Well, I can think of Cal rushing the field before a loss (as noted) and Cal rushing our field after a loss - but don't remember them rushing their own field after a loss.

C.al fans rushed their field after losing in 1996 and 1998. I believe 1996 was the year C.al's "mic man" told the student section "Nobody's leaving, we're going to rush the field, and we're going to kill the Tree." The students did, in fact, rush the field and attack the Tree, destroying the costume. The scene in 1998 was pretty scary, with Stanford fans celebrating in the southwest corner of the field protected by a line of yellow-jacketed security guys, as C.al fans tried to break through the line and start something ugly.

I miss those days when Cal fans still had fervor and cared a lot about the rivalry.  Their fan base is very dispassionate these days as evidenced by their difficulty in selling Big Game tickets last year.  It was more fun when the teams and the fans used to really hate each other.

Then there was Big Game 1997, when cal fans rushed the field AND attacked a goal post (on our field, remember) -- after a loss...

Eh, it's not like they're saying you can't do it, just saying wait until the other teams and the refs have a chance to get/run off of the field.  Seems a fair compromise.
