About our crappy attendance:
Kansas State expects to send 6,000 fans to Stanford.
I hope athletics is doing some work on getting whatever student population is still on campus to the game, because I am tired of hearing about how crappy our fanbase is from ignorant blowhards.

Our attendance is much better than the typical land grant school. In its heyday, U of Miami averaged about 41,000.

Seems to be some confusion on the Morrill Act here.
Neither Stanford nor Miami are a land grant school. I think MIT is the only land grant school, though once upon a time Yale had Connecticut's land grant.
In fact, a closer statement is that Stanford attendance is better than most (many?) non-land grant schools. Thought that isn't quite right either - for most states with two (or more) main public schools, one of them has the land grant.
The more relevant items here are,
Stanford lately is #4 among private schools in attendance, behind two religously-affilliated schools with a built-in large fan base.
And more importantly, I simply don't see the moral superiority in being a cog in a larger crowd.

In which case, Cornell would count too. They are NY's land-grant school, and the ALS, ILR, and HumEc colleges are NY state schools, while the others are private.

Sorry, life's to short to feel indignant over trivialities. I wish attendance was better and the stadium louder, especially against the non-rivalry (ie Cal, USC, Notre Dame and maybe UCLA and Oregon) opponents. But I also remember attendence during the Buddy/Walt years, and it is impressive how far we've come (yes, winning helps). I'm not going to get all bent out of shape when the critics carp on our attendance.

In fact, somehow I dropped the word "private" while writing. I also forgot about Cornell.
Cornell's case is complicated. Cornell has four publicly supported colleges (the three you mention plus the Vet school that only has grad students). These colleges get appropriations through SUNY, are accountable to SUNY for these funds, and offer NY residents reduced tuition. Nonetheless, there is a legal opinion from Eliot Spitzer when he was Attorney General of NY that "with respect to their academic activities" they should be considered private. Just what that means seems to be constantly up in the air.
My understanding is that the land grant supported these colleges only, primarily the Ag and Vet school, and was the reason they developed in this odd manner.
And it turns out there is one more, though also a complicated case. That is Tuskegee University in Alabama. My understanding is that it is not formally a land grant university, and wasn't designated as such in the original legislation. However, apparently it operates as a de facto land grant university with similar agricultural outreach and gets funds from continuing land grant programs.
Stanford football outdraws all three of these private, land grant university football programs.

To be fair, I think some peewee football games outdraw the recent Cornell teams. Cornell-Columbia has become the matchup to determine gets their 1 win for the year.
/ Cornell alum
(Another funny story. A few years back when Cornell needed a new coach, someone on one of the boards I was on was listing possible candidates and listed Walt. I believe my ensuing tirade would be described as "profanity-laced".)

I'm confused by the title of the thread. Are you implying that we should feel insulted by the article you posted, or that "Stanford sucks because attendance" narratives are inevitable due to the figures cited in the article?

The latter. I also meant "be ready to be on the receiving end of insults", your reaction to them is obviously up to you. Then again maybe you never interact with other fanbases, but I see context-free "Stanford fans suck they can't fill the seats" comments with annoying frequency.

I've gotten over the issue of attendance. So we don't have a bunch of bandwagon fans. Isn't that a sign that the fans that do show up are dedicated? And I personally don't feel like I miss out by having a lot of people not associated with teh university showing up and rooting on the team. If they want to come, great, but I won't be sad if it's just me and a couple ten thousand of my fellow most passionate Stanford fans.

Especially on Bear Insider, which is funny in and of itself and where mental illness is a badge of honor.

I know this is obvious to those on the board, but here goes......
We are one of the smallest schools in the Power 5
Our grads are not concentrated in N. Cal but are spread all over the world.
The students arent back in school yet.
There are two pro teams within 30 miles
There are way more competing things to do than in most any other place in the country (note the LA area couldnt even support an NFL team for many years).
But to boil it all down, it's correct that Stanford has many less fans than most of our competitors.

TreesAndBirds - while all true, when you respond to a put down with that list, it just sounds like excuse making. If someone is genuinely asking, why do so few fans come to games, sure that is a discussion starting list. But if someone is just trying to put you down, I find flipping the table and letting them know I'd prefer the bandwagon fans gravitate towards 'SC, Cal, and Oregon.

This one doesn't ring true to me - even removing the two pro teams, I wouldn't predict much of an attendance increase.

I used to have a truly ugly tennis game (I no longer play). It was, however, ugly but effective; at least against my untalented friends. They would spend the entirety of any match, bagging on my unaesthetic form, and my only response was, "Beat me and pop off!!!"

Actually there are seven pro teams within 30 miles. The 49ers and Raiders throughout the season, the Giants and A's in September and early October, the Warriors and Sharks in October and November, the Earthquakes in September and October.
