Week 7 AP Poll - thunder_chik - 10-10-2016

It will come as no surprise that we've dropped out of the top 25.  Washington at #5, Utah at #21.  :(

Re: Week 7 AP Poll - OutsiderFan - 10-10-2016

Outside of Washington the conference really stinks.  And even Washington was taken to OT by a pretty lousy Arizona. Despite two impressive wins in a row, the Cougs lost to Eastern Washington and Boise State.  On top of that, Utah lost at Cal, and even though ASU is 5-1, it's one was a thrashing by USC, and was forced into playing its 3rd QB of the season agains a UCLA team playing much of the game without Rosen.

Colorado might have been the glimmering hope, but they missed the opportunity to beat Southern Cal, and have now breathed life into their season.  At this point, UW can't afford a loss because the conference is so bad.  I would certainly not blame the committee for putting Clemson and Louisville in the playoff along with Alabama and OSU/Mich winner.

Whoever wins the Pac 12 deserves to go.

Conference championships are very meaningful both to fans, and I believe, the committee.

That would be like omitting the AFC south champion from the NFL playoffs because a wildcard team had a better record.

UW is the real deal.  The conference is not strong at the top, but there are no teams that are the equivalent of Rutgers.  OSU, probably the weakest team, just beat Cal.  There are lots of teams in the 25-50 range.

Here are the Sagarin rankings for the North:

Code:
   5  Washington           A  =  93.44    6   0   63.25(  88)    0   0  |    1   0  |   93.48    5 |   93.12    5 |   93.44    5
  18  Stanford             A  =  83.48    3   2   83.05(   1)    0   1  |    3   2  |   83.15   20 |   85.64   14 |   85.19   16
  19  Washington State     A  =  83.22    3   2   71.21(  33)    0   0  |    1   1  |   83.49   18 |   81.72   25 |   82.02   24
  50  Oregon               A  =  73.69    2   4   76.97(   8)    0   1  |    0   4  |   73.58   50 |   74.50   48 |   74.02   49
  54  California           A  =  72.94    3   3   71.01(  35)    0   0  |    0   0  |   72.99   54 |   72.69   55 |   72.63   56
  85  Oregon State         A  =  64.25    2   3   71.84(  29)    0   0  |    0   2  |   64.16   86 |   64.76   82 |   64.64   83

And the South:

Code:
  24  UCLA                 A  =  82.10    3   3   76.71(  10)    0   1  |    0   2  |   82.19   23 |   81.72   26 |   81.37   27
  25  Southern California  A  =  81.42    3   3   79.93(   5)    0   1  |    1   2  |   81.34   26 |   81.91   24 |   81.75   25
  27  Colorado             A  =  80.90    4   2   70.02(  39)    0   1  |    0   2  |   81.64   25 |   77.36   41 |   77.55   40
  37  Utah                 A  =  78.16    5   1   67.74(  56)    0   0  |    1   0  |   77.88   37 |   79.74   30 |   79.81   30
  44  Arizona State        A  =  76.21    5   1   70.08(  37)    0   0  |    1   1  |   75.83   46 |   78.35   36 |   78.56   34
  59  Arizona              A  =  71.25    2   4   74.19(  20)    0   1  |    0   2  |   71.42   58 |   70.48   63 |   70.13   63

Only one team (OSU) ranked below 60.

I'm a little surprised we edged out WSU given last weekend's drubbing.  Sigh.  I have to think this team gets a lot better when fully healthy though.

Remember, WSU lost to an FCS team.  And we have wins over three quality teams.  But yeah, if the "real" team was unmasked against UW and WSU, we won't be that high for very long.
