Did Stanford get Mark Helfrich fired? -
washingtonismoney - 11-13-2016
Seems to be the speculation of many. ESPN Insider speculates about replacements:
Quote:Likely candidates for the job include Oklahoma State's Mike Gundy, Boise State's Bryan Harsin, North Carolina's Larry Fedora and Herman if Texas doesn't open. All those coaches have Texas ties, which will be critical for Oregon to build back its talent base.

Memory is short for a coach that took Oregon to the National Championship game.
The decline of the Oregon defender has been remarkable.

Portland Oregonian columnist John Canzano has been calling for Helfrich's ouster for several weeks now.
Yep, given the fact that Helfrich took the Ducks to the NC game two years ago and would have had another excellent season last year if Vernon Adams had stayed healthy, you can't help thinking that this is one more example of the "you are only as good as your last game" mentality in coaching evaluation.
It hasn't helped Helfrich's cause that the four best recruits in the state of Oregon have declared for other schools.

If there is serious talk about having an offensive consultant come in (which I doubt, honestly), Stanford could do worse than Helfrich.
Quote: Its clear that Helfrich knows how to develop quarterbacks: He did it with Bart Hendricks at Boise State, and he did it with Andrew Walter and Carpenter at Arizona State, and he did it with Darron Thomas at Oregon; he has done it with Mariota, the most stunning pure talent in Ducks history. He is, his former players say, thorough and utterly prepared and calm on the sideline, an intellectual at heart who happens to be a football coach. When Helfrich was at Arizona State, Carpenter says, he asked his quarterbacks to go back and study the history of the ASU program, to learn about Whizzer White and Ron Pritchard and John Jefferson. When Thomas was at Oregon, Helfrich once spent a session breaking down the ins and outs of Buddy Ryans 46 defense.
Coach Kellys an on-the-field guy, Thomas says. Coach Helfrich is a book kind of guy. We could ask him about any position, anything about it. Coach Kelly would call the plays in the game, but Coach Helfrich would make up all the play sheets in practice.

Of course, if Helfrich knows how to develop QB's you would have to ask yourself why he has been playing "Rent a QB" ever since Marcus Mariota left.

To be fair, the first recruits that are his alone are in their second year, and it looks like Herbert has come long pretty well. The bare cupboard behind Mariota is really Chip's doing.
Also worth noting: that makes the whole "two years out from a championship appearance" thing a lot less impressive. Those were all Kelly's players. Helfrich has had a chance to bring in his own guys and it hasn't been working.
I think, too, that there were other problems, there's been a lot of coaching turnover where Oregon had been stable for ages. Helfrich might just not have what it takes.

I think it's pretty clear he's going to be fired. I'll be very curious where he winds up. He's only 43.

Anyway, if I were Uncle Phil I'd give Helfrich another year to try to get things turned around. Maybe that's why he's where he is and I'm where I am, though.

Tge Oregon offense is still dangerous, and that's with a true freshman at QB (and one that didn't spend the Spring on campus). Going forward, they should be fine on offense, which was Helfeich's thing. Their problem is defender, which has not been good, and was underrated under Kelley. Brady Hoke was supposed to fix that, but... They simply don't have the players.

The recruiting momentum at Oregon has been lost. When coupled with some injury retirements, the talent and depth have been declining. Helfrich's biggest issue may not be his coaching or assistant coaches. He and his staff are just not getting it done on the recruiting trail (outside of WR and RB).

Whizzer White was an All-American at Colorado as well as a Kennedy-appointed Supreme Court justice. Maybe he's confusing him with Danny.

For those of you following the 49ers travails, you'll see that the ducks are just paving the way for Kelly's return.
I would be surprised if Chip Kelly realized that the pros weren't for him, but he surprisingly landed an NFL head coaching job that he could just take and wait until the right college job opened up.

The Whizzer White mentioned in the article is Wilford White, who played at ASU some years after Byron White played at Colorado. Both were nicknamed Whizzer. I had never heard of Wilford myself.
