That is great news. Burns will hopefully provide depth and those other guys may all start or at least get major playing time. Taboada is a loss, but we have decent TE depth with Schulz, Kaden Smith, Scooter Harrington and two frosh Fisk and Parkinson if needed.

If you told me Burns is returning and Taboada isn't, I never would have believed it.
Taboada is a bit of a mystery. I thought he was going to have a much bigger year this year than he did, but maybe the QB inconsistency along with injury, derailed things. Even if he doesn't return, the TE cupboard is pretty well stocked.

Always a bit disappointment to see good players like Taboada leave, but given the depth we have accumulated at TE over the last couple of years, the move is totally understandable. Schultz showed development this year, Kaden Smith is reputed to be a beast, Parkinson is the top-rated HS TE in the country this year, and presumably Harrington provides at least serviceable depth, unless he is a surprise and challenges to be something more. Probably the deepest position on the team.
Nice comments by Burns. Shows both high character and good judgment. I'm reassured by his decision to stay another year. He has a chance to grow as a QB, provide steady backup (if he is not able to get the starting job), and sounds like he understands the situation, so seem unlikely to cause problems if he is not the starter. Great development for the team.

This does not sound like a person who may have thought about transferring. Jon Wilner's "sources" once again proven unreliable.
Quote: "Stanford is the best school in the country with the best people in the country. I figured I have a great opportunity in coming back, getting another degree and learning from some phenomenal coaches for another year. It's also very important to me to prove to this team and to myself that I can be so much better than I was last year." QB Ryan Burns
I will be rooting for him.

thank God Burns is coming back.
he can start against Rice if Chryst hasn't fully recovered.

Read the Stanford press release. I love how so many of them emphasize the opportunity to pursue master's degrees and get everything they can out of Stanford.Â
Also respect the humility that Burns displayed in his statement. We all hope he fulfills that wish. Who knows? Many of us (myself included) had already written him off during the 2015-16 season.

Just some thoughts:
It's possible Burns was thinking he would be going elsewhere for graduate school but got into the Stanford Grad program he wanted.  I know too simple an explanation ð
Taboada was often injured. He missed a number of games this past season. Maybe he just had enough. Also he may be off somewhere. A job? Grad school elsewhere? Plus Smith Schultz Parkinson. Â
I believe Fisk will play defense.Â

I know...and it's a damned shame, too. That guy could catch anything in or near his wingspan and was a real weapon. I wish him well wherever he winds up.

Would be one of the best stories in football if Burns came back and has an awesome year.Â

All those guys sound so level-headed. So much like Stanford guys. :)
Re: Burns back -

Would have been nice to have kept Tabaoda. Are we sure that Ryan Burns wasn't turned down everywhere before coming back to the Stanford fifth year option? I hope that wasn't the case.
And now, the offseason...

Really good news. And like all have said -- these are such impressive kids.

I agree that would be great but I think we are all realistic enough to know that probably isn't going to happen.
I think the Rice game would be a great opportunity to put Costello in and see what he can do.

I can't think of an example of a college quarterback who had lost a starting job (not due to injury) and came back to success. The most similar example I could think of is Tom Brady. My recollection (incorrect) was that Henson had passed him on the depth chart and Brady won the job back. Some checking indicates that Carr played Brady for the 1st quarter, Henson the 2nd quarter and then picked a QB for the 2nd half. Brady eventually won the job outright. Hank probably has a better memory of this as I usually only see Michigan play during The Game.

I agree with Bobk that Fisk will be moved to DL, especially if Ryan Johnson doesn't chose Stanford.

Not sure we want Shaw to get the idea it takes 5 years in the system to master the offense.

I think that's the wrong way to look at it. We want Shaw to play a QB who masters the system, whether he does it in one year or five. And specifically, I wouldn't want Shaw to automatically discard someone just because they have been in the system x years and still haven't mastered it.

Spring ball will be fun to watch to see who moves the offense better. I hope it is Costello, but if it is Burns, I will be happy for him and support him as our starter.
