Pat Forde ranks fan satisfaction in coaches - washingtonismoney - 01-30-2017

Shaw gets a "3", as in "stay the course" as opposed to "4 -- extend the contract" or "5 -- build the statue": http://sports.yahoo.com/news/college-football-satisfaction-index-how-happy-are-pac-12-fans-with-their-coaches-054852060.html

Seems to be underranking Shaw, IMO. While there are some dissatisfied-ish fans I'd say the overall approval ranking for him is quite high.

So, for the Pac 12 he has:

Four 4s: Helton, McIntyre, Petersen, Leach
Three 3s: Andersen, Shaw, Whittingham
Three 2s: Rodriguez, Graham, Mora
Two no ratings yet: Wilcox, Taggart

One year ago, probably none of those guys at the top would be a four.
A fickle business.

I would start building the statue right now if it were up to just me.  Evaluated purely in terms of Stanford's football history only Pop Warner compares; John Ralston is the only other head football coach that is even remotely in Shaw's league.  I truly hope he is here for his 40-year decision, because when he does leave I do not expect to be able to find anyone of his ilk to take over.

Much as I rail about Shawgren, I'd give Shaw a 4.5.  This is by far the Golden Age of Stanford Football and Shaw's track record was something we could have only dreamed of before it happened - AND IT AIN'T DONE YET

Re: Pat Forde ranks fan satisfaction in coaches - Hank 91 - 01-30-2017

To give Shaw a 3 seems kind of ridiculous. Folks down here are justifiably in love with Helton, but this is still the honeymoon phase. Aside from him, don't you think any school in the conference would trade their guy for ours?

Re: Pat Forde ranks fan satisfaction in coaches - rudruff - 01-30-2017

Shaw is here as long as he wants. I don't think that is the case for some of the people ranked above him.

The statue issue is different.

You have to decide why you are building the statue in the first place.

I would prefer a statue of Willingham next to the visitors gates so that Washington and ND fans have to pass it on their way into the stadium.

Yeah, the statue issue is completely different. How many athletic figures have statues on campus? Hank Luisetti, I believe. Anyone else?

A "3"?  Someone appears to have his head inserted where the sun doesn't shine.  If Shaw doesn't quite yet deserve a "5", he is close and gaining on it rather quickly.  He helped create the rebirth of Stanford football.  He has since built on that foundation and sustained a truly remarkable run of success for Stanford football.  The football program is the best it's ever been...at least in the 60 years I've been watching.  It's been amazing to watch and enjoy.

We have no idea how Pat Forde even polled all of Stanford fandom for his rating  ::)

But of course, when your coach has probably been a 4 for the last few seasons, maybe the correct choice is to "stay the course."  And the ranking titles reveal a great deal of recency bias anyway.  After the Iowa RB, I was thinking statue...ah, the emotional roller coaster of fandom.

With the current high, I suspect most UW fans would not.
Personally, while I tend to think highly of Petersen, he'll need a few more years of success before I am completely sold - and even then I don't know about "better than our guy". For example, by the service measures, he is not recruiting better than his predecessors. To some extent that may be by design - he wants his kind of guys; but he still has to demonstrate that works.

I also suspect that WSU and Colorado fans will say they wouldn't trade - but I don't believe them.

4 - Shaw, Petersen
3 - Helton, McIntyre, Andersen, Whittingham, Leach
2 - Rodriguez
1 - Graham, Mora
Too new to rate - Taggert, Wilcox

Good list, Wallender.

There are plaques in Chuck Taylor Grove honoring Pop Warner and Chuck Taylor.

Yeah.  On the Cardboard Shaw is about a 4.6; on the Bootleg, about a 1.8.  On Rule of Tree, about a 3.9 except for one guy (CRS SportsFiction) who was spewing a high volume of vitriol during the middle of the season while we were losing games.

Petersen is the only coach in the Pac-12 who has established himself as possibly being better than Shaw.  Helton had a terrific year (from game 5 on anyway) and the win in Seattle was gigantic, but the rest of his wins were either at home, narrow squeakers, and/or against subpar competition.  Franklin and McSorry choked the Rose Bowl away to them.
