Sf Chronicle Q&A with AD Bernard Muir - Snorlax94 - 02-15-2017

On Tuesday, the San Francisco Chronicle posted a fairly lengthy interview with athletic director Bernard Muir. It was a good article -- they touched on many subjects that we've discussed on the board.

The most discouraging bit was that Muir implies that fans will eventually get used to the late kickoff time for football games and will complain about it less.  :-[

I think his definition of fans is those who show up for late night games.  Self-fulfilling prophecy

"That window, even though it’s a little late for us, is important to broadcasting across the country"

Yeah not really Mr. Muir.  That window is at best open to people west of the Mississippi and more likely west of the Rockies.  The rest are either asleep or out for the night.  It sucks and it needs to either go away or be restricted to one game in the next TV contract.

Wow talk about political speak.  Didn't really take a stand on any issue.  College sports must be just perfect.

Bernard is always very diplomatic in his public statements, even at a Stanford only reception.  He will stay on message with the company line.  Discussion stays in house on any controversial actions like Coach Rittman situation or the football season ticket changes. I would not expect any insight from an interview like this.

I don't think it is understandable.  On night games, he could easily say, "Yes it's an issue but we are stuck with the current TV contract until 20xx.  When our football contract is up for renegotiation I am going to actively support fewer kickoffs after 6pm Pacific."  On Rittman (not asked because Fitzgerald is soft) he could say, "Yes, the NCAA level 2 violations played a factor in our decision."

Bernard is always a staunch defender of the status quo - never is heard a discouraging word.  Without more probing questions the interview predictably turned out to be a puff piece.  Certainly Stanford athletics are a great success and model for other schools, but we had won 17 or so Directors' Cups before he became AD.  The program has been tremendous, but not necessarily because of Bernard, who inherited an already-very successful department.

I just don't see that he has any incentive to say anything frank at all, so I don't expect him to. Only downside, no upside. Probing questions will get evasive non-answers.

He was on the NCAA basketball committee for years.Is anyone surprised that he won't rag on the TV deal? When he visits the tailgate I attend I plan to ask him if he thinks it's safe for a senior citizen to drive 2.5 hours home from a game that begins at 7pm or later.

Depends on the senior citizen.  But FWIW after DST ends even a Big Game with a mid-afternoon start time will end after dark, forget extra time for that 2.5 hour drive.  Best for those with night driving issues to come with friends, take Uber, take Lyft, use public transportation and/or buy a self driving vehicle.

I would put my money on the self driving vehicle coming to market before the Pac-12 returns to a schedule with the majority of start times at 1 or 2PM.

Kind of depends on the drive. The last 40 minutes on Lucas Valley Road, Nicasio Valley and Pt. Reyes/Petaluma. Pretty lonely at 1:30am.

Well the 11th and 12th best teams in the conference often have the majority of their home games in those Noon or 2PM type time slots.  Additionally every team in the conference has to host a Thursday or Friday game on a regular basis, so those games will always be after 5PM.  So all that needs to happen is for Coach Shaw to go 0-12 for two or three years and you'll get your wish. 

Therefore let's say I would not be happy with only 1 or 2 kickoffs after 5PM.

I believe we are locked into the current structure for a few more years.  Muir doesn't control the Pac-12 TV contract negotiations.  With UCB (and a few others) hunting for every possible dollar my guess is the NEXT TV deal will still be heavy with Pac-12 After Dark games.
