Gould spent the past four seasons as head coach at UC Davis after a 16-year stint on Cal's coaching staff.
Gould has mentored some of the top runners in the game, including Super Bowl champions C.J. Anderson (Denver Broncos), Shane Vereen (New England Patriots) and Marshawn Lynch (Seattle Seahawks). He also coached Jahvid Best, the former Detroit Lions back. The illustrious list of Gould-coached backs includes seven NFL Pro Bowl selections, two All-America first team choices -- including Lynch and J.J. Arrington -- and five All-Pac-10 first team performers.

Gould is kind of a coaching god to Cal fans. This one stings for them as they were hoping he would re-join Cal on the Wilcox staff.
A little surprised Tom Rathman didn't end up at Stanford. He has the NFL experience you'd think Shaw would want on his staff. Gould has no NFL experience, but his results at Cal can't be questioned either.

Gould wanted to return to UC but Wilcox decided to go in a different direction.Â
As you probably know, Gould's wife is a former senior administrator in the UC athletic department.

I heard Rathman on KNBR earlier this week while driving to work, and it sounded like he was probably going to sit out this year and try to get an NFL gig next year. B/c the 49ers job couldn't be finalized until after the SB, all of the other NFL openings had largely been filled, and he said he had no interest in going to the college level.
In any event, Gould seems like a great hire. I wonder what he'll be able to do with Love in 1 season, and I have high hopes for the future of the position as long as he's here (not that we've been hurting at RB in recent history).

Cal may have been Running Back U during Gould's tenure. Three Pro Bowlers plus Shane Vereen, who gained almost 3000 yards in his pro career.
This is great news, including for running back recruiting.Â

I'm excited about his potential. I wonder if he'll coordinate with Bloomgren in the run game blocking aspect. I hope he'll be able to continue impacting recruiting given Stanford's unique recruiting constraints.
