Pro Day surprises? - CardinalSagehen - 03-23-2017

If I wasn't at work, I'd go check it out.  I'm curious to see what kind of athleticism can be displayed by the guys that we didn't see at the combine.  Is Owusu able to run in the 4.5s?  Is Lloyd unexpectedly a 4.6x guy, or more like a 4.7x guy?

Will McCaffrey run again and can he do any better than he has already done?  After lighting up the Combine, maybe he just does position drills and lets his prior performances speak for themselves?

Can Rector go sub-4.4 as he is reported to have done on occasion on his home turf?

Does Conrad continue to be lights-out?

All will be revealed today...

Owusu ran a 4.38, Lloyd ran a 4.45!

CMac just ran WR drills and caught kicks/punts, and Rector just ran WR drills.

I'm shocked by those times! I know that the times always seem to be better at pro days than at the combine.  Can they be compared apples to apples?  Are the pro days hand-timed?  Do teams game the wind direction and/or the surface?

I don't mean to be so skeptical of these great performances.  But if Dallas Lloyd is faster than McCaffrey, well, I'd be surprised...

I think there's also the effect of running on home territory without the drag of travel and hotel life.  I do sort of wish we had a time from CMac to compare with Dallas Lloyd--no offense to Lloyd, but CMac seems faster, and a better 40 time would have been nice to tout.

Major eye roll here:

By all accounts, McCaffrey had a very impressive combine, helping himself with a good 40-yard run, and impressive agility skills, to the point where he was considered to have had one of the best combines of any running back.  So it is curious that the author chose to focus on this:

Quote:Christian McCaffrey made news for the wrong reasons at the Combine earlier this month after he turned in an unimpressive 10 reps in the bench press drill – the second-fewest among running back prospects in this year’s draft class.

Ugh.

Yeah, the writer opened with that.  It was a snarky comment.

I recall reading the comment from a well positioned expert (don't recall who and I'm too lazy to look it up), but that McCaffrey would be the fourth most-attractive WR recruit, if that's what he chose to do.  And he had easily the best hands of the running backs at the combine, or so I thought.  I think it makes sense for him to show what he can do running routes and catching passes.

Re: Pro Day surprises? - Phogge - 03-24-2017

I go by the eye test. In 2009 Toby was better than Ingram, in '15 McCaffrey clearly deserved the trophy. Whatever the reason, whether reverse racism, poor TV times in the East or a few Cal stalwart voters like Barry Tompkins both guys got robbed. Probably also Andrew in the Griffin year.

The most exciting running back I saw was Hugh McElhenny and I've seen them all since the early 50's. Buck Shaw knew how to use him and he shared carries with another HOF back in Joe Perry. A multiple and devastating attack. The 49ers were a competent defense away from multiple titles. The point is not when Christian is drafted but by whom and how is he used.

Re: Pro Day surprises? - fullmetal - 03-24-2017

I do think that the whole point of CMac taking himself out of the Sun Bowl was for the "when" of his draft position.  In that sense, I sure hope this all pays off because I was disappointed not to see him in person against UNC.

Insofar as the "when" is tied to "by whom," he may be showing off skills more desirable to teams at the end of the first round in an effort to both remain in the first round and to make himself more attractive to those more successful teams (who will not be drafting at the start of either first or second round).

I have a slightly nagging feeling that Christian and his parents might dispute the first part of that sentence...
