Re: Capital One Cup Standings - fullmetal - 05-04-2017

Great to see the women's teams dominating again.  Here's hoping the Stanford men can hang on through the rest of the spring...

Re: Capital One Cup Standings - Canalejas - 05-04-2017

The COCs only award points to top 10 finishes, right?  That's a tall order for baseball.

Re: Capital One Cup Standings - Papa John - 05-05-2017

Yeah, it doesn't look great for the men due to the scoring structure that favors lacrosse and baseball. Based on current rankings, Stanford and UNC--the 2nd place team--would score additional points as follows:

Volleyball
Stanford: 2 pts (9th)
UNC: 0 pts (unranked)

Tennis
Stanford: 0 pts (16th)
UNC: 2 pts (9th)

Golf
Stanford: 8 pts (4th)
UNC: 0 pts (unranked)

Outdoor T&F
Stanford: 0 pts (unranked)
UNC: 0 pts (unranked)

Lacrosse
Stanford: 0 pts (no team)
UNC: 6 pts (9th)

Baseball
Stanford: 0 pts (14th)
UNC: 30 pts (3rd)

Basically, we need UNC to tank in lacrosse and baseball, at least tank enough to finish lower than 10th and Stanford to make the College World Series. Clemson is also a threat, as they are currently ranked 8th in baseball, so we need them to not make the CWS.

Thanks for the detailed breakdown. However, if you believe the SID, we have the hottest baseball team in the nation, and closer Colton Hock, so I'm cautiously optimistic about scoring in baseball.

Re: Capital One Cup Standings - Canalejas - 05-05-2017

In the Capitol One Cup lacrosse is grouped with the major sports, counting three times as many points as other sports.  Check out how many schools participate in Division 1 lacrosse compared to the other major sports:

FBS Football 129
FCS Football 125
Basketball 351
Baseball 299
Soccer 205
Lacrosse 70

Re: Capital One Cup Standings - CompSci87 - 05-05-2017

Obviously rugby should be added at 5x points.

Re: Capital One Cup Standings - Papa John - 06-02-2017

The June 1 COC ratings have been posted and the Stanford men have been lapped by tOSU and UNC:

1. Ohio State 111
2. North Carolina 100
3. Stanford 94.5
4. Denver 85
5. Clemson 78
6. Maryland 72
7. Oklahoma 70
8. James Madison 60
9. Oregon 54
10. Wake Forest 48

Not scoring in golf really hurt, of course. So now our primary hopes rest on baseball (Stanford finishing in the top 2 or 3 and UNC losing two consecutive games starting tonight).

On the bright side, Stanford's women are running away with it:
1. Stanford 175.5
2. USC 119
3. South Carolina 82
4. Maryland 75
5. North Carolina 59
6. Texas 50
7. Boston College 48
8. West Virginia 46
9. Florida 45
9. Nebraska 45

Re: Capital One Cup Standings - terry - 06-02-2017

So, according to the geniuses behind the Capital One scoring system, James Madison has a better men's athletic program this year than Texas, Michigan, U-S-C, UCLA, Florida, et al.

Yeah, right.

Re: Capital One Cup Standings - BostonCard - 06-02-2017

Not to mention Denver, the fourth best men's athletic program in the country.

Wasn't Muir AD at Denver before he came to Stanford?

It was Delaware, & Georgetown before that

Re: Capital One Cup Standings - BobK - 06-03-2017

And ND before that.

Posting on several boards means I may repeat myself but Muir's oldest daughter is on our Lacrosse team and the youngest may be the best 7th grade VB player in the country.  She's playing 15U and her coach played st Stanford

Re: Capital One Cup Standings - 2006alum - 06-03-2017

These absurd looking results stem from two problems with how the Capital One Cup scores. One is that the multiplier for B sports gives a ridiculous edge to FCS schools. All you need to do is win FCS football (like James Madison did) and you're automatically in the top ten with 60 points, even though James Madison would get crushed by dozens of schools that scored zero points. It's nuts, and they should change FCS football to an A sport.

Denver, on the other hand, has finished in the top three in Ice Hockey (1st), Lacrosse (3rd), Skiing (3rd), and Men's Soccer (3rd). Sure, those aren't exactly football and basketball, but that's a pretty legit set of top 3 finishes. The problem, of course, is that the Capital One Cup weighs top 5 finishes so heavily (and Lacrosse with the absurd B sport multiplier) that even if Denver finishes unranked in everything else, it pushes them toward the top. But that one bothers me less if they're competing against FBS teams and coming out in the top 3.
