Stanford softball swept by #15 Utah - Mick - 04-02-2017

Stanford lost tonight to Utah, 6-2.  Utah pounded out 11 hits against Stanford's 3 hits.  Stanford also had an error.  Utah scored five runs in the third inning.  Here's the box score.

Stanford had back-to-back promising innings on offense in the fifth and the sixth innings derailed by double plays, the first with one out, and the second with no outs. Stanford has now hit into 28 double plays in 32 games on the season. We still haven't attempted one steal in Pac-12 play (which is one way to break up potential double play opportunities). Another way is to sacrifice (and we haven't attempted one sac-bunt in Pac-12 play either).

That is now 33 consecutive Pac-12 losses dating back to 2015. Road does not get any easier with a trip to #4 Arizona next weekend.

D were you there ?  I looked for you.
I love the play runner on first ground ball to second in the baseline runner runs to the tag throw to first double play
You stop you make the D throw to first. Might still be a double play but at least you can run to second while the play is made at first
However Sorenson's at bat was awesome

Hi Bob,

I was still traveling back to campus after Spring Break, so I didn't have the chance to go to yesterday's game. However, I watched most of the game on the Pac-12 Network app. I also thought Sorenson's hit/12 pitch at-bat was amazing (I think she was behind 0-2, before launching the double on a 2-2 pitch).

As a fan, I would be open to any double-play breakup strategy (aside from hard slides, of course) that Coach Hanson would consider trying. However, I simply feel that she needs to do something, given that double plays have been a consistent problem this year. Since the diamond is smaller in softball than in baseball, it is generally harder to turn two in softball, so the fact that we are averaging nearly a double play a game is a little alarming. I also think if we had run in this series, we could have challenged a surprisingly shaky Utah defense even more.

I understand the importance of a coach's philosophy, but Coach Hanson has consistently used her "Process" with few adjustments over the last three years, regardless of the roster makeup (no steals, no sacrifices, play for extra-base hits). Even when players have asked to make adjustments based on the skill set of the personnel on the team, Coach Hanson has remained resolute in her approach. If this team was winning Pac-12 games, I would have no issue. However, we have lost 33 consecutive Pac-12 games, so I think at least some adjustments would be warranted.

In the world of professional sports, "The Process" relies on the proposition that teams with poor W/L records can exchange players for draft picks and cash in on poor W/L records with more draft picks.

Not so in college sports.  And thus I think the traditional definition of insanity applies here more than "The Process."
