OT: Music Thread 2017 Edition - Bruce Wang - 04-17-2017

Couldn't make it to Coachella this year, but I was able to do the next best thing: listened to Future Islands's performance live on Sirius XMU last night.
I know the headline act, Radiohead, is better than Neworder, but I will never love a band like I love Neworder (which has 2nd line billing at Coachella this year).  Neworder sprang from the ashes of Joy Division after Ian Curtis, their front man's suicide. Another band with second line billing, Future Islands, sounds like what Joy Division would have had Ian lived.  Not Interpol.  Not even Neworder.  Future Islands.

It's early, but I think I've found my song of the year.

I stopped caring about any new music when Buddy Holly died. Being stuck in the 50's is not a bad thing.

New Order.

Agreed!

As for Future Islands, I hope they have a good career, but will any of their songs still be sung by great singers 40-50 years from now?  FYI, a guy who should have died many years ago singing the last great song that Buddy wrote:

Will anyone's songs? Music is too fractured now, you won't find near-universal acclaim for anything any more.

Been enjoying Kendrick Lamar's Damn. and the xx's I See You so far this year.

Chuck Klosterman tackles this subject in his last book  He points out that all that remains of marching band music in the general consciousness is John Phillip Sousa. He points out that entire genres of music get distilled to one artist.  This has already happened to reggae (a shame as I prefer Jimmy Cliff).  It appears that rock has died so who will represent the genre 100 years from now?  The Beatles is the obvious answer especially since they pioneered so many of its sub genres.  With its diversity of styles, maybe rock resists this phenomenon.  I do think several artists will enjoy longevity: JoyDivision/Neworder, Prince, and Radiohead are the ones that come to mind due to their combination of quantity/quality of their oeuvre and its influence.

What's with "neworder"?

I'll admit I haven't been down with the flava since 1986 or so...

So, every year I go on medical mission to bring pulmonary care to an impoverished region of Honduras.  Usually, the music there is not my style (lots of Reggaeton), but this year, Despacito, from Puerto Rican artist Luis Fonsi was all over.  It's a very catchy song (as evidenced by the fact that the YouTube video has over 1.3 billion views), and there is now apparently a remix with Justin Bieber of all people.

The video is worth watching even if you aren't into the music.

Just heard about Festival No. 6, a music, arts, & food festival in Wales.  Some great acts have performed there previously.
This year's Sgt Pepper celebration intrigues.  Its family-friendly orientation clinches it.  Anybody been before?

This one's climbing the alt-charts:

Why's this one On Topic?  The artist went to Stanford!

I rather like this song.

Thanks for broadening my musi cal horizons Publius.  My new music mining began to dwindle around 2003, which is around the time our first child was born.  Been pumping the classics into the kids during breakfast and in the car, so it's nice to bring some current tunes into the mix.

Re: OT: Music Thread 2017 Edition - 2006alum - 10-24-2017

Seems we Cardboarders have similar music tastes. The Black Keys are easily my favorite contemporary rock band. Next Girl might be my favorite rock song of the past decade. I've loved the Killers, but more the Hot Fuss/Sam's Town era. Haven't loved much of their more recent stuff (the last song I of theirs I can remember really loving was Sweet Talk from Sawdust), but will definitely give their new album a try.

And Publius, thanks for mentioning the new K. Flay album. She was on staff in Wilbur with me my senior year and she's a real bad@$$. It's awesome see how well she's doing. I bought her new album and it's fantastic. In addition to Giver, High Enough and Blood in the Cut are both great tracks. Mean It also has a very Lana Lane feel to it. K. Flay's new album is closer in sound to Lykke Li than anyone else, which is interesting given that they have very different musical influences/origins.

You're welcome.  People's musical tastes tend to ossify.  We listen to what we listen to when we were young. In my case, it's classic rock and post-punk.  I stopped actively hunting for music in my 30s and then came back to it when I had a 3 hour daily commute a few tears.  I would get stacks of CDs of music from the library every week.  I would listen to anything that somebody recommended highly.  (Rock music from Mali is pretty good!).

I find it a good way to keep young psychologically - to stay open to new ideas.

I don't believe anyone has posted this yet, but I am in love with San Fermin's new album Belong. This song is a favorite, and I would donate $100 to any politician who made it their campaign song:

Just saw she's coming to town.  Unfortunately she's the opening opening act. K. Flay - Grouplove - Imagine Dragons, which is backwards in my interest.  I once made the mistake of of going to show for the opening act (The Bravery opening for Depeche Mode).  I will never do that again.  Sparse crowd with even fewer people who care.  Hopefully she will be back on her own.

I'd be crying too if I had a three hour commute.
