OT: Another Reason to Live in Santa Barbara - Papa John - 04-21-2017

On my way home from work, I drive by a couple of new developments in the unincorporated part of Santa Barbara. The first is called The Knoll*--http://www.knollsb.com/--with homes on Plunkett Lane. Plunkett Lane backs up to Stanford Place, which intersects with University Avenue. Just up the road is the other new development: Tree Farm http://www.oakcreekco.com/tree-farm!

*On Stanford's campus, The Knoll was the University President's home. In the early 1980s I trudged up the hill for my Music classes in The Knoll (this was pre-Braun Music Center). Now The Knoll is home to the Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics (CCRMA).

Oh nice.  It's the Farm away from the Farm :)

This reminds me of the time when I tried to acquire (steal) a signpost when I was an undergrad.  Near UC Riverside was the intersection of Stanford and University streets.  It was in a hilly area and the street sign was a wooden post painted white with Stanford and University printed vertically on the sides of the post.  I thought it would make a great replacement for the support post I had for the loft in my room that year.  None of my friends had chainsaws and we knew that it would take too long to hand saw the post.  Our brilliant idea was to ever so gently knock it over with my friend's 4x4 truck.  On the appointed night, we got to the scene and all was clear.  We stationed one friend as the lookout, carefully lined up the truck, backed into the post, and shattered it to pieces.  So we hauled ass out of there and gave up our lives of crime.
I realized later that I could have simply painted the post I had like the street sign but it just didn't seem the same.

Cheers,
Pete F.

Great story, Pete. Shows the truth of the old adage that good judgment comes from experience, and experience comes from bad judgment... :)

Great story indeed, Pete!

I also lived for four years in Santa Monica, not far from Stanford Street. It turns out that, outside of California, there are a number of roadways named Stanford, including 42 Stanford Avenue in Brooklyn (for Elementary fans).

A quick Google search found more streets named Stanford in at least 15 states plus Australia, Canada, New Zealand, United Kingdom and... Quezon City, Phillipines.

Also of particular note: in Santa Monica, Berkeley St. runs parallel to Stanford St. before turning and dead-ending into Stanford St.
