Bummer. He was a great voice to have on the Pac12 and I connect him in my mind to Stanford's rise.

That's a big loss, the other writers, Lombardi included, just weren't as good. He's great, I'm sure he'll land on his feet somewhere.

Re: Au revoir, perhaps only temporarily, to Ted Miller - Papa John - 04-26-2017

I used to participate occasionally in the lunch-time chats with Ted Miller and Kevin Gemmell at the Pac-12 blogs. This is a sad day for a lot of folks.

The loss of Kevin Gemmell, and now Ted Miller, from the ESPN PAC 12 crew is a serious blow to their football coverage. I think they are the two most insightful writers about college football on the West coast.

Chantel Jennings has been let go as well.

Re: Au revoir, perhaps only temporarily, to Ted Miller - 2006alum - 04-26-2017

As were Eamonn Brennan and Dana O'Neil. Here's a long list of casualties.

Very sad day for sports fans. I feel a change comin' on, and it's not good. I don't see how there's enough outlets for all of these folks to find new platforms. It also makes me wonder whether ESPN.com is bleeding revenue, because the vast majority of the casualties seem to have been primarily web journalists rather than on-air talent.

Jennings wrote the following goodbye post:

Wait, so who's left? Is Lombardi going to cover everything alone? Are they just abandoning the various blogs?

Bummer, I liked him and Gemmell.

Re: Au revoir, perhaps only temporarily, to Ted Miller - pcgoode - 04-26-2017

Looks like Kyle Bonagura escaped the cuts.

Thanks for sharing this. I wasn't a fan of hers until I read it.

Wonderful post.

Outdated cable model being hit hard by cord cutters. The lost cable subscribers aren't coming back so belt tightening was necessary.  ESPN did seem to have an excessive amount of writers in duplicative areas. Bloated organizations can survive in periods of growth but when you are losing millions of subscribers per month, bloat can't last. Miller may be more insightful and experienced than Lombardi or Bonugura, but he was also likely more expensive.  With Bonogura and Lombardi, they still have good coverage.  Lombardi has been criticized on this board, but I think we recognize that he is growing as a writer and becoming more insightful so hopefully we will enjoy his future work and not be burdened by our past biases against him. It is still free content for us after all.

Not entirely. ESPN Insider, where a lot of the good online content from these writers goes, is not free. I'm paying for it. And I'd much rather pay for Ted Miller than Lombardi, that's for darn sure!

I said this two or three years ago, I guess I'll say it again. Lombardi is the single-best source on Stanford football, and I greatly enjoy his work. I worried greatly that he'd be cut today. I'm still a bit worried at the lack of tweets from him, but he has not popped up on any of the lists floating around.

I'm sure (OK, not sure) he reads this board occasionally. David, please keep up the good work!

Re: Au revoir, perhaps only temporarily, to Ted Miller - BostonCard - 04-26-2017

I've been a pretty big Lombardi critic, but I think he's improved dramatically since being hired by at ESPN.  He is less of a "hot take" artist than he used to be, and offers better commentary.  His writing, which also detracted from his pieces, has improved.  He's become passable, and obviously has more insight about Stanford than most.

Yep, just posted.  ESPN is making business decisions, as they say :(

All star BTL producer Willie Weinbaum survives... so far. Cost cutting really started when they severed ties with 441 Productions who made poker so popular. Really cheap with the crew rates but since there is such a glut with crew these days they can get away with it.
