Baseball @ WSU Thursday-Saturday -- NCAA selections on Monday - Papa John - 05-25-2017

Stanford will play its last regular season three-game series at WSU starting tonight (Thursday) at 6 pm PT. All three games will be (un)available on the Pac-12 Networks.

Stanford is currently sitting at #9 in RPI; however, one loss to #105 WSU might knock us out of the top 10. On a related note, Stanford, at 18-9, is second in the Pac-12, one game ahead of UCLA (who is playing at Oregon) and three games ahead of UA (who is playing versus Cal). No one is catching OSU, who at 27-3 conference and 45-4 overall is the best team in the nation.

The NCAA Baseball Selection show will be aired Monday at noon ET on ESPNU. It sure would be nice to get a top 8 seed, but I'm not sure what the chances are.

My DVR has been set for today.

FWIW, D1baseball.com has us at no.10. (Edit: as of 5/22)
As a rough guide, we should presumably be rooting against the 9 teams above us this weekend?

Kentucky won yesterday, but So Miss and TCU both lost.

Re: Baseball @ WSU Thursday-Saturday -- NCAA selections on Monday - JJJ - 05-25-2017

Another article dated 5/23 from the same site:

Quote:For now, the edge for the final national seed goes to the Cardinal. Stanford picked up yet another series win last week and is one of the hottest teams in the country. The Cardinal has an impressive 7-4 mark vs. RPI Top 25 and an outstanding 28-13 mark vs. RPI Top 100. By comparison, UK is 4-7 vs. RPI Top 25, but does possess an impressive 18 wins vs. RPI Top 50. There’s also the Golden Eagles, who are riding a 14-game winning streak and are up to 10 in the RPI. USM has yet to play a game against an RPI Top 25 team, which raises some alarm bells from a national seed standpoint, but Scott Berry’s club has been incredibly consistent and storming through the C-USA tournament would give them a highly compelling argument.

Too early to speculate what So Miss and TCU going 1-1 so far means for us?

Re: Baseball @ WSU Thursday-Saturday -- NCAA selections on Monday - StanfordMatt - 05-25-2017

My semi-educated guess is that TCU's 1-1 is enough to solidify them as a top 8 seed and Southern Miss' 1-1 is enough to knock them out of the discussion. I think we need Kentucky to lose tonight and preferably their first elimination game as well. For us, to get a top 8 seed I think we need to at least win two in Pullman and preferably all three.

Have to say that I find it vaguely confusing to watch Stanford play WSU in some sports, notably baseball, given teh similarity of their colours to ours. [Yeah, I know their crimson is a little brighter than our cardinal.]

Good thing they go with the W for Washington rather than the S for State.

I just wanted to say that I despise baseball on artificial turf fields. Especially "dirt" paths.

Re: Baseball @ WSU Thursday-Saturday -- NCAA selections on Monday - DC 86 - 05-25-2017

Stanford wins the first game of the series against WSU, 13-2, record now 38-14 overall and 19-9 in conference.

Just now watching the DVR. Bats look hot. Since we can't save runs for future games, I hope the future games are full of more Cardinal runs!

Re: Baseball @ WSU Thursday-Saturday -- NCAA selections on Monday - Papa John - 05-26-2017

Stanford's RPI is holding at #9. #8 TCU plays #59 Kansas tonight in the Big 12 tournament, and #7 Kentucky plays #31 South Carolina this afternoon in the SEC tournament.

I'm still feeling that Stanford will need to sweep WSU and have TCU and/or Kentucky lose today to move up.

Another her good step

We take game two 5-3.
Kentucky eliminated from the SEC tournament with a second loss, this to South Carolina.

Today's RPI has Kentucky at 8 and Stanford at 9.  Kentucky has lost 4 of their last 6.  Yep hard to understand

If it makes you feel any better, 9 said in an interview that he didn't understand RPI either...

The team is up 6-1 on Wazzu and threatening to score again in the 8th.

I'd like to think the selection committee (or whatever they're called) will take into how hot the team has been all month and reward it with a top 8 seed.

9-1 now.  Whoops 11-1.

Worst announcers ever.    Either in the studio or just don't care

The selection show moved.  Iirc espn2

15-1 is the final score.  That's an exclamation point to the regular season! Hope the selection committee was paying attention!

Re: Baseball @ WSU Thursday-Saturday -- NCAA selections on Monday - BostonCard - 05-27-2017

Question... how strictly does the committee adhere to the RPI?  I know in other sports they look at things like the last 10 games and take injuries and other factors into account.

It would be nice to move away from RPI, which is sort of the Dow Jones Industrial Average of ranking teams.  It's only virtue is simplicity and the fact that it's been used for decades.  But there have long since been better ways to rank teams by computer.

It appears that the committee doesn't put all that much stock in RPI lately, though of course the obvious question is "compared to what?".

Off memory, last year there were a set of teams with good RPIs that did not get in (highlighted by UNC at 19 (I think) and Iregon State) and a group with low RPIs that did get in (including UW who was rewarded for finishing #2 in the Pac 12).

[That's all by my shaky memory - some details may be off.]

We'll see tomorrow but Stanford is likely to look pretty good for a national seed by RPI. Hope they don't opt for some measure where we come off worse.

EDIT: Warren Nolan has Stanford at #9 in RPI right now, but only 2/10000 of a point behind Kentucky. That's just about a tie.
