Wow. That is one bad article.

At the very least she could use an editor:

"UCLA Football Head Coach Jim Mora has never posted a win against the Cardinal since he began his tenure in 2009."
2012

"Stanford Cardinal Head Coach David Shaw is in his sixth year"
Seventh

"Stanford are not as strong on offense as they’ve been in the past."

"Love is a proven runner; he tallied 115 yards (in the bowl game McCaffrey skipped for fear of injury) against North Carolina."
119 ... and odd placement of ().

"Despite losing Solomon Thomas to the draft, the Cardinal still has 8 returning starters."
Possibly OK. I might say 9 (Thomas and Lloyd) but Hoffpaiur started most games he was healthy.

"However, the Cardinal will have some depth concerns [in the secondary]".
I think the Stanford secondary is likely going to be the deepest it has been since ... ever?

Isn't that a British thing? Maybe I'm not remembering correctly, but when I've watched the World Cup, the British announcers treat the team name as plural, even if for everyday usage it would be singular. E.g. "France were eliminated in the first round..."

Yes it is, and that would also explain a lot of the other miscues. I'll guarantee that if I tried writing about cricket, it would be all messed up.  :P

He's almost as smart as Trojan Al.

You are being too kind.
Two other times in the article the author used "Stanford is ..."

Yes but it is spreading malignantly on this side of the pond, thanks mainly to soccer. The Grammar Guild are apoplectic.  (see how bad that sounds)

Even if this is a matter of British v. American grammar, newspapers have copy editors to, in part, enforce a standard style across various articles appearing in the paper. At least they used to.  Perhaps that has changed along with the transformation of journalism and the emergence of e-publications such as the Huffington Post, Bleacher Report, et al.

Yes but you are sufficiently smart & self-aware to know not to do so!

I love the "because it's the only game that matters" part. The more of our opponents I hear this about, the better!

Sorry Ashley, but your man Jimmy doesn't have the talent to stay on the field with our boys. It's going to be score early, score often for the Cardinal.  I'm calling it now - Stanford 37 UCLA 17

Right on Winflop!
