Alabama currently leads with -8 through holes 5-7.
Tournament format and schedule from NCAA web site:

The lowest completed scores for the day are Auburn at -6 and Alabama and Ole Miss at -1. Alabama was at -10 early on this morning.
Cardinal currently at -1 in very early going.

The teams that played this morning are completing their rounds. We already see that this golf course is playing 2-3 shots easier for the men than for the women. Some holes (especially the par 5s) just play shorter for the men. One positive aspect of the course I noted from watching the women is that the greens were playing really well. They would hold a shot, putted at a fast but not unreasonable speed and were not completely inscrutable to the players. I saw a lot of made putts. The course will yield low scores. Players in the morning have already posted a 66 and a 67. In contrast to the women, we will see under par scores for the men's teams this week. I hope that one of them is Stanford.

Pretty interesting
course statistics so far. The start of the back nine have some of the holes that are easiest to come in under part (specifically 11 through 14, and especially 18), and the teams that start out on the back nine seem to jump out to low scores early (like Alabama), only to climb back up as the day goes on. I don't remember seeing such an obvious split with the women, so it'll be harder to judge where every team is likely to end up until they finish the full round.

I had just noticed the same thing.
Stanford has started on the front, so hopefully they'll find some low scores after they make the turn.

A counterpoint is that Baylor is playing with Stanford, and Baylor is crushing the front 9, leading the overall field by 3 shots at -9. Stanford is -1 right now as a team, and they're not even using McNealy's score, as he is +3 through 7. But on balance, it seems like the red numbers have come on the back nine, it's true. Baylor may just be on fire today.Â

Noticed the same thing. Baylor is going off on the front, but the front is playing almost half-a-stroke higher per player.

Of course it's now a weather delay

The Stanford women have risen to the challenge the past three years in the NCAA tournament during stroke play, qualifying for match play and even improving their position on the final round each year.
The Stanford men's results tell a different story.Â
In 2015, they finished a strong 2nd in the regionals, then missed the cut after finishing 54 holes in 21st place.
In 2016, they won the regionals, then missed the cut after finishing 54 holes in 28th place.
In 2017, they tied for the regional championship and we'll see what happens at the national tournament.
McNealy in particular has really struggled at NCAAs.
In 2014 as a frosh, he finished 55th
In 2015 as a soph, he won the regionals, then finished 35th at NCAAs
In 2016 as a junior, he was 2nd at regionals, then finished 112th at NCAAs
In 2017 as a senior, he was 3rd at regionals, but he has not recorded a birdie and is +3 at NCAAs so far
I am sure that he and the coaches have tried a lot of different things to get a better performance at the national tournament. I hope that something kicks in soon. Stanford needs him to lead the way to advance.

From StanfordMGolf twitter at about 4:20 pm pacific - "Back on the course. A very, very wet course."
If they do not finish Round 1 today (very likely), the tournament committee will probably bring the teams back around 6:45 or 7 am tomorrow to finish. Then maybe a gap of 30 minutes while the grounds crew resets the golf course (move tees, change the hole locations) and they will start Round 2.

I spent about 4 hours out there this afternoon and 2.5 were rain delay. They sent the kids back out as soon as the lightning cleared but it was a deluge and they had to stop play after only a few minutes due to casual water that needed to drain. Everyone was drenched.
I saw McNealy miss three straightforward pretty short putts. His ball striking seems fine.
I will be back out there in the morning.

Yup, Stanford is done for the day on holes 14-16. +2, good for tie for 17th (which would miss the 54 hole cut). But only 6 holes separate 4th and 18th place.

6 strokes is nothing in this format. They could make that up on the remaining holes from yesterday's round, not to mention Round 2. So far this looks like a tightly-packed field. Perhaps we see some separation today.

We're the gang that cannot shoot straight. The field is 40-under par, with only one team over par: Stanford at plus six. Barring an incredible turnaround, their tournament ends tomorrow. And we're not recruiting anywhere near contending level.Â

We finish the back 9 at +2 on the day, while our playing partners shot -4 and -5. In just a few holes on the front nine, the playing partners garnered more birdies and an eagle while we are even par on the front nine. We're not too far from the cut line but we just don't seem to have it. Any insights into why? Course scouting/management/coaching? Pressure? Style of play/game not well suited to the course? Not used to these conditions (then why were our women able to adapt so well?)

Today we are finished for the day at +4. - 1 for the day. 11 back of 8th place.

I walked with the team today. The primary issue today is that nobody went real low - every other team had somebody who was putting well. Conditions were perfect. Not many really bad shots (although each of our seniors put one in the water). Guys were just leaving themselves 15-25' birdie putts and nobody made them. The second nine gives me some optimism, but need some scores in the 60s tomorrow morning.

Apparently not a course for them and/or a bad weekend.  In golf it happens.
Only an amazing set of scores tomorrow and Monday gets them into the 8, but it could happen I guess.
Team should be able to be in the mix at next year's tournament if the course is favorable for them.
Oklahoma came in as team #17, UNLV is team #16. Teams don't need to be one of the best team on paper all season to win in this format.

I think they can make the cut to 15 for day 4 but not sure about the top 8. As stated above, nobody is going low. But they have the guys who can if they find their groove.

I wouldn't bet on next year's team getting through its regional. McNeally is a brobdingnagian loss.
