Only School to Ever Turn Down College GameDay - DC 86 - 06-04-2017

ESPN College GameDay is such a powerful promotional vehicle that it's interesting for a school to turn down the opportunity to host; most schools lobby for the chance to generate all the free publicity that comes with the visit. It seems to be self-defeating to pass on hosting GameDay.

Lee Fitting, the show's longtime producer spoke at the SVG College Sports Summit last week and revealed that in the show's entire history they had only been rejected once. "The school's in Berkeley, California" he said.

He did clarify that it was under a previous AD and that the current AD has indicated that they are interested, although obviously that is unlikely in the near future.

Wonder what game they wanted there.

On a related note, I like how far back they have to go on the Pac-12 network to find classic games to show for Cal.  I think at some point it might be a radio feed from the 50s...

If they do get Gameday, maybe they can top this sign:

On the "Football on TV" thread most of the posts appear to be wishing that the Pac 12 and Stanford would limit the concessions that they make to the television networks in order to maintain other things that matter.

Perhaps that is just what our east bay friends did.

One possible explanation for turning down Game Day: Berkeley ordinance requires noise variance for amplified sound exceeding 65 dBA, which requires at least 30 days advance application and ESPN asked less than 30 days in advance. The university may have been concerned that they either would be subject to the requirement or would at least cause a ruckus that the university could not afford because they had bigger fish to fry. I seem to remember a bunch of howling not too long ago over stadium lighting.
