...Bruce Feldman reports that Oklahoma head coach Bob Stoops is announcing his resignation supposedly effective "immediately"
http://www.foxsports.com/college-football/story/report-oklahoma-head-coach-bob-stoops-is-retiring-060717 .
Guess that means, hell, I don't know. That Arizona coach Rich Rodriguez's job is in even more in jeopardy? Maybe Arizona is going to take a run at the Stoops brother they thought they were getting the first time.

He's only 56. Generally, that is pretty young for retiring.
He'll be rumoured for every moderately high profile head coaching job that opens up for awhile. [Though I don't know why he'd be interested in Arizona.]Â
He also says "the timing is perfect".
It's perfect if the goal is to get his assistent (Lincoln Riley) the head coaching job. If Oklahoma had any other thoughts, it's not so perfect for them.

Stoops must really be tired of it. They've won 10+ games in 14 of Stoops' 17 seasons. In the other three, they won eight. they're 11-2 in each of the past two seasons.

I'd guess it's several reasons.
1.) Sons play football and they're about to enter their senior year.
2.) Health woes have been written about. Stoops actual quote: "I've got a lot of issues that I've got to manage." His dad was a coach who died at 54 after a heart attack on the sideline.
3.) Defense was bad enough that there might have been pressure to fire his brother, former AZ head coach Mike Stoops, who is his DC.
4.) He's won a NC, and how close is Okla. really to competing with the very top teams? Remember, they lost badly last year to Ohio State. The year before they made the playoffs but lost somewhat badly to Clemson. At a place like OU, the expectations I imagine might wear on a coach.
He's supposedly going to take some administrator job and stay with the university.

There's also the possibility of a heretofore-unknown scandal about to break. That would be pure speculation, however.

Steward Mandel's piece on the topic:
Quote:Bobby Bowden and Joe Paterno couldnt manage it. Neither could Steve Spurrier. Or Woody Hayes. Or even Bear Bryant, for that matter.
Bob Stoops on Wednesday achieved something incredibly rare among college football coaching icons: He went out on top.
The timing may be odd, the circumstances unusual. But if the 56-year-old Stoops really is retiring on his own accord after 18 mostly glorious seasons as Oklahomas coach, he does so in the most triumphant fashion of any coach in his stratosphere since Nebraskas Tom Osborne two decades ago.

Well, Urban Meyer did it.
Then he came back.

Mandel did give this shout-out to Meyer and Saban later in the article.
Quote:While understandable if not mentioned alongside five-time national champ Nick Saban or three-time trophy hoister Urban Meyer, no other coach this century has accomplished anything remotely close.

Leave it to Skip Bayless to be a total jerk (I would rather use a word that would be censored) about Stoops retirement:

Quote:RealSkipBayless: Bob Stoops: Terrific recruiter, poor motivator. Again and again his teams weren't ready to play big games they were talented enough to win.

Skip succeeds once again in getting attention. My approach to the thought of reading or listening to anything Skip says: just skip it.

I remember Skip used to fence with Stephen A. Smith. Smith is interesting because he as predicted the NBA finals
incorrectly every single year in a row since 2011. And he called the 2017 NBA finals for Clevelend, so...seven bad calls out of seven.

Many, maybe most, of their opinions are about their need to say something,
anything, to justify their salaries. That's what makes me almost go into a coma anytime Skip Bayless opens his mouth. One of college football's ruling class goes out with genuine accomplishment to his name, and Bayless is like the tiny neighborhood dog yapping and chasing cars as they drive through.

Stoops did lose a number of big games (the BCS games), but so did 50% of all coaches who ever had their teams play in those games.

He won 10+ games in 15 of 18 seasons. If we subtract a game for the shorter seasons, Barry Switzer won 9+ games in 13 of 16 seasons, but that included three national championships and 12 conference championships.
The three coaches between Switzer and Stoops flat out couldn't hold a candle to either one, and that was Gary Gibbs, Howard Schnellenberger and John Blake. Gibbs never did better than 3rd in conference, Schnellenberger finished 4th in his only season and Gibbs never did better than fifth.
Stoops won one national championship (went undefeated, something Switzer never did) and won 10 of 18 conferences. He was 9-9 in bowl games, but he finished the season ranked 3rd and 5th the last two years.
