Off-season alum news - Viking_Guy - 06-08-2017

Don't know how many fans of Los Gigantes are out there, but:

A.  Sympathies for the season you are suffering through.
B.  And Stanford's own Austin Slater may offer some temporary relief.  He hit the longest HR by a Giant this season today - 461 feet.

Big fan of the Giants and Slater here.  His BA is just .214, but his OPS is currently .782, third highest behind Belt and Posey and his OBP is .353, second highest of the position players. He's only had 14 ABs and 3 hits, but he doesn't looked overmatched, and he's very fast in the field.  Has a good eye at the plate (two walks, two strikeouts)

In another disappointing Giants loss (2-3 to the Twins), Slater was a bright point.  He went 2 for 3, raising his BA to .250, his OBP to .375 and his OPS to .775.

The Twins had an "effectively wild" pitcher yesterday who was coming inside on Slater -- a lot.  To the point that Giants announcer Kuiper stated that MLB rookies see a lot of inside fastballs until they can prove they can hit them.  And Slater is seeing a lot of down and in pitches:

That "wild" kid has one of the brightest futures in baseball. The Giants have nobody like him. Electric.

Agreed.  He's great fun to watch.  I'm totally envious.

On the Giants side...I remember a section in Money Ball that, paraphrased, stated that all things tend to even out, and if a good team has a bad 1/3 of the season, then the other 2/3 generall balance it out.  So on that topic, three days ago, the Giants had a season high 16 hits in a 9-5 10 inning win over the Brewers.  They almost lost the game twice, but the Brewers had an error, and the Giants 3B (Nunez) made an amazing catch.

Then today, the Giants had another season high of 17 hits in a 13-8 victory over the Twins.  Nunez, Posey, Pence and Slater all had three hits.  Slater's season average is up to .320.  Tomlinson batted leadoff and went 2 for 4, hitting .308 for the season.  Every starter had at least one hit.  Cain continued his rolling disaster of a season at 5 earned runs in 4 1/3 inning.  All the middle and relief guys pitched well.
