Sun Bowl rings? Seriously?? - winflop - 06-10-2017

I'm sorry but if it isn't a national championship, conference championship, or NY6 bowl there shouldn't be a ring.

If the team win isn't important enough to find a few bucks for rings then don't expect them to risk their potential NFL livelihood on a minor bowl game.  Right?

If there was ever a set of players that deserved that type of participation award, it would be that Sun Bowl team.  RB doesn't play. QB gets hurt.  Team hangs in there and wins the game with a defensive play.

If you expect them to treat the game like it is important, then the rings should be there too.

And there should be participation rings, or at least nice ribbons and medals, for the losing team members too. Remember, everyone is a winner. ;)

Everyone does get a participation award or two or more.
They each got time in those sponsor gift suites to grab $550 worth of stuff.
And let's not forget the bowl game is supposed to be some type of "reward" too.  'cause nothing says good job like a trip to Detroit/Shreveport/Boise/Mobile to play in an empty stadium in December rather than spending time with hometown friends and family.

Per sbnation

Quote:The NCAA allows each bowl to award up to $550 worth of gifts to 125 participants per school. Schools can, and usually do, buy additional packages that they can distribute to participants beyond that 125 limit. In addition, participants can receive awards worth up to $400 from the school and up to $400 from the conference for postseason play, covering both conference title games and any bowl game.

At the very least it should look a little shoddy, instead of looking nicer than the Rose Bowl one above it.

Re: Sun Bowl rings? Seriously?? - Stymie - 06-10-2017

If our players scoffed $550 worth of swag in El Paso, I am VERY disappointed.  Say it ain't so......

Why would you pass it up?  Those cowboy boots, shirts and hats are a great perk.  Anything on top of that was well deserved for the work and effort they put into the season,

Boise is a great town and I like Mobile too.

Those rings look like they cost more than a few bucks unless those are lab-created stones.  If they're over $1K each (likely) then that's well over $100K that I think could be much better spent elsewhere within the Ath Dept.

And I'm sorry, too, but if you weren't there for 3 weeks of spring ball and you weren't there for fall camp and you weren't there for the day after the UW and WSU beatdowns and you weren't there for the comeback after them, then you don't get to decide. You can bitch but it seems pretty small.

I thought I read that past bowl commemoration rings were paid for Arrilaga or other wealthy donors. It doesn't come out of the AD budget. If that's the case with these rings, then who's to say the donors would have donated that $100K for another AD usage?

I thought one of the program's mottos was tangible evidence (for the work and effort). It's not enough to have been good enough to win, or to have been close to winning, the outcome -- victory -- is tangible evidence of that work and effort. The room full of trophies in the training building is tangible evidence. The axe is tangible evidence.

Yes, these young men deserve tangible evidence of their own.

The Sun Bowl ring has a cool design but has far fewer stones than the Rose Bowl ring.

I'm glad these players receive something tangible to commemorate their efforts on the field, in addition to the education, skills, values, friendships, and usually, diploma, from their efforts off the field.

Re: Sun Bowl rings? Seriously?? - Mick - 06-11-2017

The schools pay for the rings.
Jostens typically makes them.
They're made out of semiprecious stones and metals.  They're not $1k apiece, the limit is $415 per player per school.  The conference can kick in $400.  And the bowls are allowed to give $550 worth of swag.  The Sun Bowl gift suite included a Silvertone Watch; a Majestic Pro Base fleece pullover; an Ogio Politan backpack; an Under Armour cap; and a commemorative coin.

Thanks everyone. You guys are the best.
TOTALLY OT but this "memory" from 6 years ago just surfaced on my fb feed. Sorry about the thread drift.
(I wore this '87 shirt as "good luck" for our CWS appearance in 2011.)
