This week in opponent attrition: the Ducks' QB chart -
ColoradoTree - 06-19-2017
One half of the Oregon QB competition, rising junior Travis Jonsen (a former 4-star dual threat recruit), reportedly intends to transfer:
http://www.csnnw.com/oregon-ducks/breaking-oregon-quarterback-travis-jonsen-transfer. Per this report, he'll play immediately at Riverside City College so he can immediately play elsewhere for the 2018 season. This is the second Oregon QB to leave the program since the season ended, as Terry Wilson, Jr. (also a former 4-star dual threat recruit), left to go to Garden City Community College in Kansas.
Jonsen enrolled early in Spring 2015, redshirted that fall, and then didn't play last year, while last year was Wilson's first year in the program. So, Jonsen should have two years of eligibility at whatever school he calls home come Fall 2018, while Wilson should have three.Â
The upshot is that it's still going to be Justin Herbert's job, and it's unclear how much of a competition this really was. That said, the depth chart is incredibly thin in the event Herbert gets hurt or plays poorly. The backup will likely be true freshman Braxton Burmeister, a--wait for it--4-star dual threat recruit. After that is QB-turned-WR Taylor Alie.Â

I understand that transferring when you lose a QB competition is all the rage these days, and I'm not without sympathy there--a sophomore with NFL aspirations shouldn't have to give up his dream just because he lost a job to a freshman or to a classmate. If he thinks he can go play elsewhere and convince his new coaching staff that he should be the guy, then more power to him. But there's something honorable in sticking around and helping the program even when you aren't going to be the starter.Â
Contrast Oregon's situation to ours. We have a redshirt junior starter capably backed up by a 5th year who decided to stick around instead of transferring and a redshirt freshman who seems content to wait his turn, meaning that the incoming true freshman doesn't need to be pressed into service too early and can spend the necessary time to absorb the playbook. Admissions willing, we've got another terrific QB waiting to sign on the dotted line. Things can change in an instant, of course (and a younger QB winning a competition is a recipe for instant transfers, so whatever happens once Keller leaves could upend the apple cart), but for the time being, things are setting up as well as possible.Â

This is certainly the "glass almost full" interpretation, which I think is pretty accurate. However, I am not so sure Burns had any good alternatives, and I am also almost certain he has not given up on the idea he can win the job, which is both good and bad. Good, because you don't want anybody out there who doesn't want to start, and bad, because it may lead to controversy if Chryst isn't obviously the better choice. However, I do agree better too many options than not enough.

I give Garden City respect, but then again I was born and raised in Manhattan, KS. As for the GCCC Broncbusters, they have a rich history of placing their alumni in major power five programs: Corey Dillon (UW), Nick Marshall (Auburn), Tyreek Hill (Ok State)
What's more interesting to me is that GCCC's athletics websites lists among its men's sports:
Rodeo (OK, makes sense) and...
Meat Judging
CI, perhaps you can enlighten us on competitive meat judging?

Never participated but it's intercollegiate (and interscholastic) competition in determining age, $ value and yield grade (amount of fat to lean and quality of cuts, basically) of a carcass. The courses and competitions produce the pros who do similar work in slaughterhouses....for private enterprise and the federal government.

Thanks, CI! Meat judging certainly seems like a useful set of skills, and competition seems like a good idea to hone those skills for the competitive industry those folks will enter.Â
But how and why is this a sport? There are plenty of competitive intercollegiate activities that are not sports--I'm thinking of debate, speech, mock trial, robotics competitions, etc. I would find it jarring to see any of those activities listed under "sports" on an athletic department website, too. Is there an athletic component to meat judging that I'm somehow missing?Â

Growing up, I used to ask the same question when Sports Illustrated had a chess column. Not even sure IF meat judging is designated as a "sport" rather than a "competition". It's co-ed, I believe, so it probably helps with Title IX a little. I have no idea.
