Earning money from donors/boosters? -

Heard this the other day on the radio and immediately wondered...is that in-line with NCAA regulations?
During a press conference, Richard Sherman was recounting experiences about when he'd been treated differently because of the color of his skin and told a story where he was earning money at Stanford from donors/boosters for odd jobs like moving heavy furniture.

Did he just gaff or is this ok with the NCAA? (From what I understand, which is not very much in this arena, you can seek outside employment...it just seems that seeking employment from a booster/donor muddies the waters a little)
Thanks

The waters are slightly muddied, but if you actually do work, you're allowed to be fairly compensated for that work. You just can't be unfairly compensated as a result of your status as a student-athlete, iirc.

I didn't see occasional work like moving items specifically listed on Stanford's compliance page, but it sounds very consistent with the rules. In fact, given the prices in Silicon Valley, $50 sounds below market rates, if anything. My neighbor recently offered $15 (on the website nextdoor) for someone to come and scoop a dead squirrel off her driveway and she had no takers.
From the Stanford compliance page:
NCAA rules PERMIT Athletics Representatives to:
-> provide summer employment for enrolled student-athletes at the going rate for similar positions;

My first firm used to hire Stanford football players for a variety of positions including moving furniture. I had some marketing interns, and they were, not surprisingly, uniformly intelligent, inquisitive and hardworking. I still keep up with one of them.
