All is not lost. - cardcrimson - 09-09-2017

If I recall correctly. We beat SC last year and they went to the Rose Bowl and finished in the top five. Perhaps there is hope.

Granted our tackling, our OL, our DL, and dare I say, our play calling are suspect. However, our running backs, our defensive backs, and our QB looked okay, and better than I expected.

Yes. USC played great. We just got beat by a really good team. We still could be pretty good.

Re: All is not lost. - CornFed - 09-09-2017

Our defensive backs gave up two touchdowns to receivers that got behind them with a short field.  The interceptions were spectacular feats of athleticism.  Their tackling was hit and miss (pun intended).  They are not without needed self-examination.

Buncom whiffed more than Brandon Belt.

At least Belt hits the occasional home run...  He's a Top Six first baseman, according to Mike Petriello of MLB News.  I don't think Frank makes the Top Six of...well, you name it.

I agree. We are a good team who got beat by a great one (or at least one who played great on this given day).
There is a reason why U$C has won eleven straight with Darnold at the helm.
As I said before, after nearly a decade of absence from college football's elite, I'm afraid they are back.

Re: All is not lost. - Stymie - 09-10-2017

24-42 ain't bad, away for  even if palindromic, but it's time to pull the plug and reboot.

1.  Outside of Phillips our DL sucks.  Burn redshirts NOW as fast and furious as is possible.
2.  The OL sucks too.  The sooner that Little and Sarrell take over the tackles the better.
3.  Ease Costello into the QB mix.  Chryst is good but just average of what we need
4.  We have 4 GREAT tight ends.  Play them FFS!
5.  "Intellectual Brutality" does not compute when you can't get plays or the right number of players onto the field when needed.  Our play calling and game presence is pitifully poor.

Re: All is not lost. - pcgoode - 09-10-2017

One thing that strikes me is that for the first time in quite some time, as collective groups, in my view our skill position players are better than our guys on the lines. There are some exceptions to this, such as Herbig and Phillips on the lines, but given the way we have recruited and developed some very good PAC 12 linemen over the Shaw-Harbaugh era, it makes you wonder what has happened.

Re: All is not lost. - Oasis - 09-10-2017

$C 's receivers got a lot of separation. Ours didn't, although they came up with some spectacular catches.

The big difference, on both sides of the ball, was the line play. Their O-line blew us off the line of scrimmage all night. (Phillips gets purple heart and silver star.) Our O-line struggled with their rush.

But of the remaining schedule, only Washington looks like a clear winner over Stanford. They give up a lot when they play away from Seattle. If we manage to win that one . . .

Re: All is not lost. - gocard14 - 09-10-2017

Don't forget that we lost to northwestern and then won a rosebowl. This was our first game against real competition and was on the road. Our DBs played poorly by their standard, but two of those touchdowns literally required perfect NFL throws from Darnold on the run. Sometimes you just have to tip your cap to the opposition.

Our D line is a big concern and may keep us out of the top tier of teams and our Oline needs to get better or it could be a long season. O line I think will get better with time and increased presence of our true frosh. Dline I'm afraid we're stuck with the horses we have.

I was impressed by Darnold's accuracy.  This exaggerated any mistake we made

Other than the missed tackles (Buncom in particular), the rest is mostly a failure to put any kind of consistent pressure on Darnold. If you give any good QB 4+ seconds to throw the ball and step into his throws, he's going to make any secondary look pretty susceptible.

That was more appropriate after the NW loss.  We didn't shot ourselves in the foot, over and over, like in that game.  We just got beat.

Re: All is not lost. - Goose - 09-10-2017

All is not lost. Actually, the offense didn't play that badly. The killer problem was that we couldn't stop the run. That alone was enough for us to lose the game. The Toejams could dominate the time of possession at will. That also wore down what defense we actually had. We couldn't blitz much because we needed linebackers to stay at home to stop the run (which they mostly didn't, but that was the theory). We also never got any quick pressure on Darnold, which repeatedly gave time for the third receiver to run patterns into the middle of the field with either no Stanford defender visible or one that needed to make a one-on-one tackle and couldn't. The Toejam passing game made the final score look worse, but with our inability to stop the run, it didn't matter. The good news is that UW is probably the only team out there on the schedule that can play that way (I hope). It also appeared to me that our DL was kind of resigned to defeat from the start. I sort of saw deer in the headlights looks. Am I imagining this, or did others see the same thing? Fix that and we probably do a lot better. I am sure that if you had told the team before the game that we would get two INTs, they would be thrilled and expect to win. We had our moments. We were in the game through the first half, even with our problems. Stop the run, and it is all different.

Re: All is not lost. - yvonne - 09-10-2017

Stopping the run is the very core of defense.

Re: All is not lost. - Beeg_Dawg - 09-10-2017

I was disappointed in our line play on both sides of the ball.  USC was more physical, and looked more like Stanford has looked in the last few years.

USC OL consistently had our guys 3-4 yards off the line of scrimmage.  Running the ball is not much of challenge when your OL gets you that much room.  Our OL gets a B in run blocking, a D in picking up stunts and blitzes.

Can't tell yet if the talent is there, but we will know soon enough.  If the D fails to get home on Rosen, UCLA is gonna be dancing with our dates.

Let's hope Rosen's arrogance and idiocy irritate our players as much as he seems to piss off people on this board. If so, there will be plenty of motivation to stop him! I can't think of a single QB - Pac-12 or otherwise - I would be more excited to see on the receiving end of double digit sacks from our guys...

If UCLA can run the ball, we are doomed. If they can't, Rosen is doomed.

We will learn a lot about this team before they play UCLA.

Stanford's opponent next week San Diego State has the country's 2nd leading rusher and national leader in all purpose yardage, Rashad Penny. Against ASU on Saturday night, he rushed for over 200 yards including a 95 yard TD run, returned a kick 99 yards for a TD and had a 33 yard TD reception. It's like Stanford has to prepare to defend against Christian McCaffrey.Â
