Fourteen - Redrum - 05-17-2010

Both Rivals and Scout report the verbal commitment of Shutang Mungwa, a 6\'2", 190 (Scout) 200 (Rivals) lb. strong safety from Bergen, NJ.    Mungwa had offers from Louisville and Syracuse but is as yet unranked.   This looks like another of the staff\'s own evaluation-based offers (as opposed to joining the herd of schools trying to sign every 4-star in sight).   Reportedly he fits the Harbaugh template for an player who instinctively makes plays, tackles well and tackles hard.  No word on his academics.

More importantly,  his name shows a very favorable trend in the important  consonant-to-vowel ratio.   Of course,  the ratio isn\'t as high as some of your consonant-rich-vowel-stingy Nigerian, Croatian or Serbian names,  but it shows a favorable trend worth watching.

Chasing the 4 and 5 star DBs has proven to be very difficult for Stanford.  Even when those types verbal they seem to find a way to move on later in the process.

I am always excited to hear about DBs that have offers outside of the Ivies, so props to JH.

Ultimately, the best news is the number 14.  There were years with Ted\'s buddies that the class only reached 14 in February.  And the class was filled with 2 star types.  To have 14 in the May, with a handful of 4 star types, is just outstanding.

it will be interesting to see if Mungwa ends up at SS or OLB.  I like his coverage/hitting ability at both spots.

Maybe because YouTube has broken the HS football recruiting video out of the 1" X1"  lo-res format resident on the recruiting services sites.

It\'s interesting to compare one\'s own reactions to watching the video to what you imagine the coaching staff saw.   This isn\'t some end-to-end career highlight reel.   He doesn\'t singlehandedly destroy opponents on every play.   Guys he tackles don\'t instantly start going backwards.   What I took away from this is his reaction to get to the play (i.e. be where the ball was going).   Also, he takes on blockers and can still make the play.

I like the video for a couple of reasons.  first, a S who mixes it up, and on occasion actually shows how to wrap up a ball carrier and who keeps the ball in front of them on passes.  many years our safeties do not show 1 or both attributes.  recently it looked like one of our safeties thought it was illegal to use his arms to tackle.

of the S video I have seen this year, Wayne Lyons video is the one I like the most.  he\'ll be tough to get out of FL though.

after watching the video, I came away thinking that at the very least this guy could be very good on special teams.  He seems to relish the big hit.  And maybe he becomes much better than that. I also thought, given his size, he might grow into a LB.  Nice to see more verbals to Stanford, but is anyone else wondering if these spots are filling up a bit faster than we might like?  I know a few commits will be lost along the way, either to the admissions process or just reconsideration by the student-athlete, but I\'d love to see another DT and maybe a WR and CB before all the spots fill up.

Personally, I find the questionaire a little more than annoying.  They should be more direct...for example about three questions at the end are actually about playing time - why not just ask.  But if I were a coach, I\'d be a little put off on this guy and his motherly mother.

I agree that the questionnaire is at times a bit much, especially asking for the names of recent graduates from the engineering program, which seems like an invasion of privacy (I think I wouldn\'t answer before consulting with the former grads themselves and asking if they were open to having that info shared).  But on the other hand, I figure the schools are (or should be) looking into the background of the student, including any signs of questionable off-the-field stuff, so what\'s good for the goose...

At least he\'s taking the process seriously.

Graduation records are public domain information. Any person can call the university and ask what students received what degrees in what fields.

I would have to look at it but I am incredulous.  Under FERPA, you can\'t even tell a parent (who is paying all the expenses) how their kid is doing in school.  Most schools would likely confirm attendance but other information I think would require the permission of the student to be disclosed.

According to the educational privacy law (from http://www4.law.cornell.edu/uscode/20/1232g.html) institutions are not restricted from releasing \'directory information\':

But I do believe that the student controls what is in the directory....given stalkers etc.  I would worry about a school\'s liability if they released all of that without the student having assented.  OTOH, the Stanford Alumni directory is open to alums BUT the student controls what is in that....how else to explain Glenn\'s photo of Tom Cruise as his image???
