Week 4 Net Yards per Play - stupac2 - 09-25-2017

Here's the table:

TeamO YPPD YPPNet YPP
UW7.213.93.31
Oregon7.054.582.47
WSU6.214.371.84
Utah5.864.271.59

Stanford7.556.271.28
USC6.455.21.25
UCLA7.56.580.92
Arizona6.25.370.83
SDSU5.855.220.63
Colorado5.575.010.56
California5.575.550.02
ORST5.526.39-0.87
ASU5.566.54-0.98
Rice4.546.17-1.63

Hopefully the game this weekend goes about as well as the Rice game, since those two are right next to each other. It's interesting that by this simple measure UW is by far the class of the conference, Oregon is the next best (but lost to abysmal ASU???), and there's a big squishy middle before you start to get down to the bad teams. We'll continue to see this evolve now that we're into conference play.

I think you'll have difficulty selling a measure that puts Stanford as the #1 offense so far.

Of course at this point one's place on the list is largely determined by strength of opponent.
UW has played Rutgers, Montana, Fresno, and Colorado.
Oregon has played Southern Utah, Nebraska (struggling so far), Wyoming, ASU.

Also of interest, Stanford is #1 on offensive yds/play list.
Defense only #12 (of 15).

I mean, you might. On the other hand, if you do comparative performances you'll see Stanford does well: no one's done as well on offense as Stanford did against SC, Rice, and UCLA. Only one team (...bizarrely, UC-Davis) has bettered Stanford's SDSU performance.

ESPN ranks the offenses:
4.  Washington
5.  Stanford
12.  Oregon
13.  Notre Dame
27.  UCLA
30.  USC

I'll pay attention to stats like this after 6 or 7 games. Sample size too small at this point.

I mean, sure, but if that were someone's proposed power ranking of our conference I wouldn't think they're completely insane. Maybe a little insane, but not completely! The main reason I want to do this week-by-week* is to see how it evolves, we know it won't really be a great indicator for a few more weeks.

*I missed last week because of a combination of work and daycare snafus.

Our offense has been all Love.  If KJC can hit receivers,  we will be humming on offense.
