QB Play - dabigv13 - 10-15-2017

Missed most of the game (these fall weddings are criminal), but from highlights and stats, Chryst looked good. Any thoughts on differences from prior to now? When was Costello getting snaps, garbage time or did he have an earlier series?

1) Very clean protection, so we didn't have to see him under pressure. His accuracy and touch were excellent as well. So I'd say the line helped him out on one of his weaknesses, and he didn't miss any obviously makeable passes.

2) Costello got the third series of the game and didn't reappear until garbage time. Costello looked good in his time out there, though a botched center/QB exchange ruined a chance at a fourth down conversion in his early-game series.

Re: QB Play - Hulk01 - 10-15-2017

Perhaps the best throwing game by a Stanford QB since Luck.

And Costello made a couple great throws, too.

Not sure there was a planned run by either QB.

In conference games, Stanford now ranks first in the conference for Pass Efficiency Rating.

Re: QB Play - BostonCard - 10-15-2017

Chryst had the best game of his career.  Great reads, good throws on the money.  His only interception should have been a touchdown (great throw to Ju Arcega Whiteside on a slant, that bounced off JJ’s hands right to a defender).  I saw one overthrow, and zero lawn darts.  Also, no delays of game or blown time outs.

Costello came in for one series in the first half.  He hit Irwin on a beautiful crossing route.  His only mistake was a fumbled snap (with Chaffin at center, if I recall) on fourth and inches.  The rest of his time was garbage time, but he had a nice throw to Colby Parkinson for a TD.

Both QB’s played really well.  Chryst earned an A for the game; Costello I’d give an A-, though he had limited opportunities.  But if you thought we knew where Chryst’s ceiling was before the game, we were wrong.  He has a much higher ceiling than we through, and if he keeps playing like this, we will be in good hands the rest of the way.  His bugaboo, though, has been consistency, though maybe that was due to lingering effects of his injury.

Re: QB Play - SF_Cardinal_Fan - 10-15-2017

Considering that current freshman QB  Davis Mills will part of next season's "QB conversation", and that this year Costello has  performed really well , for the current season I would like to see Costello receive lots of playing time.
Specifically, come summer of 2018, it might benefit the coaches to have seen Costello perform this year (rather than have both Costello and Mills college game time skills remain relatively unknown).
To complicate matters, I believe Chryst will have eligibility to play next season as well.
I guess a roster with potentially 3 starting caliber QB's is a good problem to have  :)

Re: QB Play - gocard14 - 10-15-2017

Chryst was great. He was quick on the release, dicisive, and accurate. He made good reads, showed a good understanding of our matchup advantages and put the ball out their and let our athletes make plays. His hit people in stride and let them get YAC which he wasn’t before.  Even of his few non completions, one should have been a touchdown to JJAW and one was a great read and throw to JJAW on an Oregon blitz that was very close to being a big play. Costello looked about equally good, but Chryst gets credit for playing that srl over a much larger sample size.

Major credit to the Oline for providing great pass blocking and a consistent run game even after Love went out. Oregon’s D stats were inflated by their competition, but it’s still a much better defense then they’ve had in the past few years.

Re: QB Play - Hurlburt88 - 10-15-2017

I did see one bad throw, which Chryst got away with.  It was an out route that he tried to throw with touch, and the DB was able to get clearly in front of our receiver (I don't recall who) & smack it away with one hand.  I felt like a better DB could have turned & gotten both hands on the ball.  Other than that, was thrilled!

Re: QB Play - BostonCard - 10-15-2017

He also overthrew a receiver once, and his first through of the game got batted at the line of scrimmage.  But those are nits, and his throws were mostly money.  Plus his stats would have been even better were it not for the interception of the hands of JJAW, and another throw down the sideline that was bobbled and dropped.

Re: QB Play - Hulk01 - 10-15-2017

To bad you missed them, because you missed at least six KC throws that were as good as any Luck threw.  (Though none as spectacular as Andrewss falling-down missile against ASU).

And those passes required almost every club in Keller's bag:  Two gorgeous deep touch throws over AW's shoulder; at least three quick  slants, one that AWhiteside turned into an interception; and a rolling out and running dart in the corner of the end zone that showcased his exceptional arm strength.

He threw a great game.  And yes, the OL protecting him terrific, too.

Re: QB Play - BostonCard - 10-15-2017

You also missed two nice fades for TD’s.

In fact, I think we were 3/3 with three TD’s on the fade.

Re: QB Play - winflop - 10-15-2017

I am going to temper my enthusiasm because of the low quality opponent, but Chryst was throwing dimes and we dominated on both sides of the line especially in H2 when we got our defensive captain back.

Re: QB Play - dabigv13 - 10-15-2017

I will have to catch the 60 min replay.

Someone else remarked that he seems to have set a new, higher upper limit on his ability with this game. Hopefully he can keep it up.

Remember that before the game the line was that we wouldn't be able to run on them and Chryst would have to beat them with arm. The first part wasn't true, but Chryst sure did beat them with his arm. Also worth noting that by S&P+ their defense is ranked #60, and that's after we demolished them. So they're not an excellent team, sure, but it's not like we're talking about Rice (#124).

The team that showed up Saturday night was a bad team. Not as bad as Rice, but of the caliber of some of the teams Chryst played well against last season. Also, that D ranking was in part built when their starting QB was in and they were putting points on the board and keeping the D off the field

Chryst played well against Oregon last year. That certainly made it lots easier for him to do so this year. He had "ownage" on Oregon, and he knew it. Oregon was a bad team on Saturday. They may be better than that next week, but they didn't have it Saturday, for whatever reason. I totally agree that we should not to over-interpret the result. Nice win, but it doesn't prove that we are as good as we appeared to be. WSU will be much more definitive of where we are.

Re: QB Play - phxfan - 10-16-2017

I was pleasantly surprised by Chryst's performance but Oregon's pass D was really bad.  I thought their run D was actually pretty good in the first half.  Love only got his yards because he's so excellent.

Despite Saturday night I still much prefer Costello and wish he had been named the starter during August camp.

Re: QB Play - Hulk01 - 10-16-2017

We made Oregon's pass defense looked worse than it is.  Their PER on the season is 122.  Against us, it was 192.

Re: QB Play - lex24 - 10-16-2017

Love got his yards due to his excellence and the good work of the 0-line. As for the defense, their defense was getting talked up.

This is a four game run. During which Stanford is averaging 41 points, 486 yards a game. QB's are a combined 65-100. With no sacks.

Re: QB Play - martyup - 10-16-2017

It doesn't matter how good a pass defense is when your QB drops the pass on a dime.  KC was throwing perfect balls to well covered receivers.  The jump balls in the end zone were simply a mis-match on size and talent.  Those DBs didn't have a prayer.

Re: QB Play - teejers1 - 10-16-2017

Hard to see Shaw giving Costello more snaps, barring two things we'd rather not see (i) injury, or (ii) sustained bad performance.

We'll see if Chryst can continue to drop it in a basket on deep sideline passes where the WR is well covered.  Those were the completions that surprised/impressed me the most.

And 0 sacks in four games is nice.  Very nice.Â
