Tough break for Cal; Downs is the team leader in tackles (65), interceptions (2), sacks (3), forced fumbles (2), fumble recoveries (2).

Damn good player. Sorry he's hurt.

His replacement was pretty good too, if I read the article right. All the best to Downs for a complete recovery.

Man is this really disappointing news. Downs was probably the most entertaining player to watch on the ×ÉÉ team this year, having a brilliant season, poised to be Pac-12 DPOY. Everyone has injuries, but this is quite a hit list for the 59ers:
Best WR - out for season
Key WR - out for season
Best RB - out for season
Best TE - out for season
Best OG - kicked off team in August
Best OLB - out for season
Best ILB - out for season
This doesn't count guys who have missed games here and there with less severe injuries, at WR, OL, LB, and RB. They are fortunate not to have suffered any significant losses at DL and DB, so maybe that helps balance things out, but it's rough to be playing Game 8 without 7 of the best players you had going into the 2017 season.
That said, it seems fair to say Stanford could absorb all these injuries and still field a competitive, contending team. This just puts a highlight on how important recruiting and building depth in the program is.Â
