Tiebreakers - gocard14 - 10-17-2017

I had been operating under the assumption that we would have to win out in conference to win the pac 12 north but the events of last weekend certainly changed things. One plausible scenario is we beat UW but lose to WSU and UW beats WSU, creating a 3 way tie. If I’m reading the rules correctly, in that case, the first tiebreaker that would apply is record within the Pac-12 north, and we and UW would have one loss compared to WSUs two. WSU would then be out, and we would win the head to head tiebreaker over UW based on having beat them.

Last week and injuries taken into account, this is looking like a reasonably plausible scenario.

I've already buried and grieved for our playoff hopes, so fighting for the division and the conference gives me renewed hope and energy.  I would dearly love to see SC again in the Pac-12 Championship Game.  Maybe a Rose Bowl won't be in the cards for us because of the dominoes that would need to fall to get us into the playoff, but a rematch of the 2013 Rose Bowl against Wisconsin held at either the Cotton or Fiesta Bowls?  Yes, please.  (Wisconsin seems tailor-made for a NY6 berth, what with their terrible schedule except for Michigan and a seemingly inevitable loss in the Big Ten title game to Ohio State or Penn State.)

Yes, that's an accurate reading of the tie-breaker rules, as far as I can tell.  The losses this weekend gave us a couple more ways to make it to the CCG.

Any team among the three (UW, WSU, Stanford) that goes 2-0 against the other two is almost certainly going to be playing in the CCG.  That team could even afford to lose one other conference game and still win the three-way tie-breaker based on their record against the other two.

If all three teams go 1-1 against each other (which is somewhat likely) and have the same conference record, there are two cases for us:
a) We lose to WSU and beat UW - we're in! (better North Division record than WSU and head-to-head win against UW, as you mentioned)
b) We beat WSU and lose to UW - we're out. (same North Division record as UW and head-to-head loss against them)

So aside from our dominating both teams in the head-to-head matchups, the most helpful external event for us would be for UW to lose two other games on its remaining schedule (UCLA, Oregon, Utah, WSU).  That would give us the leeway to beat WSU and lose to UW.

Wow, just re-read this and it's more confusing than it needs to be! Maybe I should just give y'all a link to the 3-way tie-breaker rules, if you're curious:

Way too early to be speculating about such scenarios, but we've got to do something at work, right?  ;)

Other than with us, all of Washington's remaining games are in the friendly confines of Husky Stadium. I would say the chances of them losing two of them are just about zero. So we better plan on beating Washington.

What were Washington's chances of losing to ASU?

IMO, much better than they are of losing two games at home. Most teams play quite a bit better at home than they do on the road, but with Washington it is particularly true. Last year they (as a playoff team) were taken into overtime on the road by a mediocre Arizona team .

One has to consider UW's history at ASU. ASU has won the there 11 times UW has played in Arizona. For some reason, ASU has been able to win, even when they are the weaker team (in theory). No rational reason why.

Re: Tiebreakers - JohnR34231 - 10-18-2017

When Washington has a good team (as they clearly do this year) they are very tough to beat in Husky Stadium. We went through a 30 year period beginning in the '70's where we lost every game we played there, and usually by a fairly substantial margin.
Ironically, when we finally broke that drought, it was the only game we won all season. (Thank you, Wlat),
