Stanford President Marc Tessier-Lavigne devoted an entire blog post to Stanford athletes' accomplishments in fall sports.

I would be shocked if our President actually wrote that PR pap.

How things have changed in two decades. In Late Spring 1997, my ex-wife and I were invited to a New York City reception for parents of incoming frosh, among them our younger daughter. The chablis-and-brie event was staged at one of the Ivy League alumni clubs in Midtown.
To start the formal portion of the welcome, a Stanford official (male, mid-40s) tinkled his wine glass and asked, How has Stanford recently made big news?
 Nervous silence.
So I ventured, "Tiger Woods?" in honor of his recent historic first Masters victory.
The Stanford official eye-rolled me before claiming that LSJU scientists had just unMars-ed conclusive proof of prior life on the Red Planet. And no, his name was not Gen. John Kelly.

Sure, but that he wants his PR stuff to be on sports is meaningful.

Yes, exactly.

Well, Tom Watson had won it 16 years earlier. So maybe not that big a deal, in his rolling eyes... ::) .
Still, I like the new President's embrace of sports.

Well, if a Stanford researcher had found conclusive proof life on Mars, then in my opinion that would have been bigger Stanford news than Tiger Woods winning his first major.
However, Tiger did actually win the Masters. No Stanford researcher found conclusive evidence of life on Mars in 1997.
Despite some apparently contradictory results from the 1976 Viking mission, the consensus is that no positive evidence has been found that life ever existed on Mars.
In fact, I wonder what that Stanford official was referring to. In summer and late fall the Mars Pathfinder missions landed, and they found evidence there once was large amounts of water on Mars, possibly a requirement for life. But the timing doesn't seem right for that result.

Please note the date on this press release, to which the Stanford rep apparently referenced:

Thanks.
That was interesting. Unfortunately, it appears this was later decided not to be good evidence for life on Mars. Here is a short article that touches on the topic:
https://www.nasa.gov/audience/forstudents/postsecondary/features/mars_life_feature_1015.html
Quote:In July, 1996, it was announced that Dr. David McKay, along with a team of scientists at Johnson Space Center (a division of NASA), had discovered possible fossils of bacteria in a meteorite named ALH84001 that came from Mars. ... While many scientists were excited at first, much of the proof offered fell apart. NASA said that after two years of study "a number of lines of evidence have gone away".
But, once you noted this I remember some hubbub at the time. Zare was on my original thesis committee. I defended around this time, and he had to beg off due to scheduling difficulties. Possibly related to this experiment, but my memory is a little fuzzy.Â
