Saquon Barkley Best of Times Catch -
Snorlax94 - 10-21-2017
Ok who else was reminded of that old Kurt Russell, Robin Williams movie, the Best of Times, during tonight's Penn State-Michigan game?
Not since Taft High's Jack Dundee have I seen a wide open receiver unnecessarily bobble a perfectly-thrown-into-the-hands ball so much for a touchdown reception.

Didn't Scarlett do that early in the year, against Rice I think? I guess that wasn't a TD.

My comparison of Barkley to the hapless, pitiable Jack Dundee was not intended as s compliment.
On another reception, Barkley stumbled to the ground with no one near him, short of the first down, apparently tackled by one of Michigan's invisible defenders.

Eh, shit happens. I'm with you that I don't get the hype behind this guy, but I don't think that's a great reason to knock him.

Some ESPN announcer said it was a scrappy undersized blade of grass that took Barkley down on that play :)
He's a good back with a snazzy jump-over-the-defender move, but if he played in the west no one would be talking about him for Voldemort. The Voldemort seems to have very little to do with actually being the best player -- it's about being the player best-positioned to get noticed, sadly.Â

Saquon is a great player. If he wins the h award it wont be because it was all hype. He will have to prove himself against OSU and Wisconsin.Â
We can claim bias against Christian and Bryce but when Christian had his opportunities in prime time during award consideration, he didnt capitalize unfortunately.
Back to Bryce -Â If stanford were 7-0, That would have helped as well.

No, you're right. McCaffrey failed to impress in the big games:
http://pac-12.com/article/2015/12/05/2015-pac-12-football-championship-game-mccaffrey-propels-stanford-title-record
And only 228 total yards the week before against number 6 Notre Dame.

I really wonder how many voters would've turned in different ballots if they had waited until after that game. Might've made a difference.

I think this would have made a difference.
The vote was quite close, and over the last few days the ESPN talking heads were rather uniformly stating McCaffrey should get the award - but probably wouldn't. And they kept commenting upon how many voters had already turned in their ballots (though do not remember if they really knew the number).
I am not sure how much the ESPN line shapes public opinion versus reflects it, but it's seems to be one of the two.

Which prime time games were you referring to specifically? The Pac-12 Championship where he set the Stanford all-purpose yardage record with 461 against U$C? The game before against Noter Dame where he gained 228 yards? the 2016 Big Game where he gained 283 yards in 31 carries? Perhaps you were thinking of the 2016 Rose Bowl where he rushed for 172 yards in 18 carries against #6 Iowa and caught 4 passes for another 105 yards
and returned a punt for a 63 yard TD
and ran a kickoff 29 yards, to say nothing of the kickoff TD that was called back on a rice-paper-thin holding call? Are those the games you mean?

When you put it that way, it almost sounds as if some of the voters were biased or perhaps voted before all the games were played. Nah...

Could be. We'd have to ask the 5/6 of H voters who don't work in the Far West and have the words "SEC lickspittle" in their job descriptions.

17.5% of the votes that year were submitted prior to the conference championship games, according to the DAC press release cited here:
https://www.sbnation.com/college-football/2015/12/12/10015764/2015-Â -trophy-voting-results-ballots
The article states that the number was 15% but 157 ballots were submitted early out of 897, so it appears that they rounded down.
However, McCaffrey lost by 293 points (awarded on a 3-2-1 basis), so the early ballots probably made the voting margin slightly wider but were unlikely to have affected the outcome in terms of the winner.

Note that the h-award voting is always before bowl games, so McCaffreys performance against iowa wasnt going to be counted. But it was very unfortunate that many voters put in their ballots before the conference championship game against USC, because McCaffrey sure capitalized on that opportunity.

...and I may be guessing here, that many voters submitted ballots without seeing many, if any, of our games at all.
As for the rest of our season, the WSU and ND games times haven't been announced yet but the UW game starts at 10:30 EST on a Friday night....not good....at all

Is there any info on specific voters specific votes? How many ballots left one of the top 3 candidates off the ballot entirely? And from which regions?

All we know is that Henry was named on 799 of 897 ballots (89%) and McCaffrey was named on 713 of 897 ballots (79%).
Henry won all regions except "Far West", McCaffey finished third in the "Mid Atlantic" region (DeShaun Watson was second there).

Where are all those "pundits" that were minimizing CMac's all-purpose yards two years ago? I think it was something along the lines of "kick-off return yards are easy and just pad the stats."  Why am I hearing none of this from the talking heads now? After runner-up status for Toby, Luck, Luck, CMac and now H-Love, the award has become a joke. Too many writers with an axe to grind.

You can check out his game by game stats hereÂ

Against Votre Dame, sc, Oregon he had very very pedestrian rushing stats and kick off return stats. Some need to take their cardinal colored glasses off
