Record coming closer... -

In the Love hoopla, Stanford fans haven't paid as much attention to another record that's bound to fall sooner or later: the Stanford all-time wins record for a head coach. Shaw, right now, has a nice 69 wins -- but Pop Warner holds the record with 71. One assumes Shaw will get the record if not this year, then next. But it's still worth an eye.

If he can't get two or three more wins this year, then FIRE HIM!

I must admit, I've always liked being able to tell people the all time winning coach at Stanford is Pop Warner. I don't know that anyone knows anything about Pop Warner as a coach, but the name is so synonymous with football in America that people give Stanford automatic respect.

Well, think how much respect Stanford will get when you tell people that Pop Warner is only the second winningest coach.

Some pretty well known others, too.

Wouldn't it be cool for him to break the record against UW in a game that puts us in the driver's seat!

If the team wins two out of the next three games, Big Game will have two significant records on the line. Shaw will have a chance to overtake Warner, and Stanford will have a chance at a record eighth consecutive win in our rivalry with that school across the bay.Â

Excellent point. A future Aflac trivia question during a Stanford game (perhaps they'll use this on the game(s) when Shaw is tied with PW)-- "With a win today, David Shaw becomes the winningest football in Stanford history. Who will he be replacing?" Queue the montage of black and white photos of guys with leather helmets.

Marchie Schwartz, 28-28-4 at Stanford. College HoF as ND player, one of Noter Dame's first great Jewish players.
Others include James F. Lanagan, 23-2-4. Gave up coaching to be a lawyer. Stanford law school. Jim Harbaugh, you know his story. Pop Bliss, born in NYC, educated at Yale, All-American, didn't give up points on defense for two years. 8-0-1 record at Stanford.
And of course, the inestimable Coach Shaw. Best of them all, by the time he's done.
