Love getting some "love" from Sports Illustrated - Treebound - 10-24-2017

I'm thankful that the SI crew is shining some front page light on Bryce:

Interesting to read about Gould’s influence.

Re: Love getting some "love" from Sports Illustrated - CompSci87 - 10-24-2017

Does anyone get a video about Love with the article? For me there's a still of Love with a play button, but it reloads and plays a video about Penn State instead.

The article itself is excellent. Some great stuff there I hadn't heard before.

Re: Love getting some "love" from Sports Illustrated - Treebound - 10-24-2017

I'm guessing that SI may be showing this as their cover story in the west, given Spiny's link.  I was hoping that they were showing it to the entire US/world and offsetting some of the dreaded east coast bias.  Perhaps not.

It's a fantastic article with nice callouts to Bloomgren, Gould and Love's academic pursuits!  He's truly a gifted student athlete and I'm optimistic that he can break the dreaded bias.  I'll be cheering for the Ohio State defense this weekend.

Re: Love getting some "love" from Sports Illustrated - French Rage - 10-24-2017

The two best parts:

Quote:For a few days a week during the season and on weekdays during the summer, Love works in the laboratory of Michael Longaker, a surgeon who studies how stem cells might be used to help patients heal without scarring. Love does grunt work to aid Ph.D. candidates, medical students and doctors who may or may not follow football. “He’s learned a lot of fundamental cell biology, how you work with animals, how you grow cells, how you analyze wounds,” says Longaker, who backed up Magic Johnson at Michigan State. “The shocking thing to me is over half to two-thirds of the lab just know him as Bryce Love, undergraduate. They have no idea that he’s one of the leading candidates for the Voldemort. And I think that’s what he likes.”

Quote:To satisfy Gould, Love would have to stop trying to outrun tacklers in space and start setting them up to fail before they ever got near him. At most practices Gould sends would-be tacklers at Love from every angle so he can learn to use their momentum against them. He makes Love navigate a maze of bags to teach him to pick up his feet and never stop moving them. And most days during camp and twice a week during the season, Gould has an assistant whack Love with a tackling dummy so he learns to keep his balance running inside.

Re: Love getting some "love" from Sports Illustrated - GoodGrief - 10-24-2017

Well, this is just a delightful article.

Found the play and camera angle they were discussing!
http://www.espn.com/college-football/video?gameId=400935291
click on the played labeled, "Love busts down the field." The standard camera angle is first, and then the end zone angle comes next.

Below is my favorite part of the article
Quote:A few weeks ago, while meeting with the offensive linemen, Bloomgren kept rewinding a Love touchdown.
“Guys, this has to be fun, right?” he asked the blockers.
One responded.
“Coach, if we just hold our blocks…” the lineman said. Then he snapped his fingers. “The dude’s gone.”

A heads up for the admin -- the deletion of the H-word makes this a broken link.

In fact all of the autocorrections break links if one of the auto-substituted words is in the link.

No, I think that problem was fixed a few years ago, which is why I was surprised when this one doesn't work. I think they probably have to create a unique fix for each glossary item, and since this one's relatively new, it hasn't been patched.

CompSci has said that his fix for this problem has subsequently broken. It's entirely possible that it applies to everything, we just see the H-word significantly more often.

Test post to see what happens to former UDFG and Washington Racial Slur QB Joe Theismann.

I went to the article on Love and just above the headline was a picture of......Saquon Barkley. PSU hack?

Yvonne has reinstalled the software, thus dropping my patch. I'll ask if she wants me to put it back.

Due to the fragile system that SMF has for optional modifications, making any patch and then adding/removing some other mod could potentially break things.

Also getting love elsewhere. Nice lengthy interview - lots of good tidbits.  Lots of Stanford props.  Hope he plays tomorrow!
