Good News - Dave Fleming doing play-by-play for OSU game on ESPN - CardinalSagehen - 10-25-2017

"Live national broadcast on ESPN with Dave Flemming (play-by-play), Brock Huard (analyst) and Laura Rutledge (sideline)."

Aside from being among the top sports announcers in general, Dave Fleming probably still follows our team and won't make the kind of inane, uninformed comments that national announcers often do.  For those that don't remember, he's a Stanford alum and our former radio play-by-play guy until ~2012.  Looking forward to the call!

Re: Good News - Dave Fleming doing play-by-play for OSU game on ESPN - OutsiderFan - 10-25-2017

Dave Fleming does all the Thursday night game broadcasts this year, but what's interesting is they are switching up his broadcast partner each week.  Huard is good, and obviously someone who knows the Pac-12.

As an aside, I hate Scott Reiss on the radio.  I don't want sarcasm and snark in my play-by-play guy, and Reiss brings plenty of both.  Ted Robinson is better.  Hell, Joe Starkey - who calls plays like you are watching them next to him - is even better.

That is good news indeed. Looking forward to the game!  8)

I'm still dumbfounded how every game for almost two years announcers kept saying "Kevin Hogan, NOT a running quarterback..."  Once was odd enough, but to go on for that long was really discouraging.

That was a peeve of mine as well. A single glance at his statistics tells the story, let alone watching some highlights. Discouraging is a good word for it.

Our non-running quarterback Kevin Hogan, during the course of his career, had 315 attempts for 1249 yards, a 4.0 ypc, with 15 TDs.

Not too shabby.

Does this stat include sacks as rushing attempts for negative yardage? It's already a solid rushing clip for a "non-rushing" QB, but it may mask Hogan's true rushing stats if so.

I'll use this thread about broadcasters to remind folks that Stanford alum and ESPN analyst Rod Gilmore is fighting multiple myeloma even as he maintains his broadcasting schedule - https://twitter.com/RodGilmore/status/922644624568598528

Please keep him in your thoughts.

Re: Good News - Dave Fleming doing play-by-play for OSU game on ESPN - OutsiderFan - 10-26-2017

I knew Gilmore was battling cancer, but man, multiple myeloma is the bone cancer that took my grandfather. Surely treatments have become better and increased longevity since when he passed 25 years ago, so hopefully Gilmore can benefit.  Really do like him as an analyst.  Nobody would ever know he's a Stanford guy when he does Stanford games.  True professional.

Also one of the few announcers I like. I mention this because since there are so few I like (maybe 10-20%), the good ones stand out.

One of the Stanford games had somebody I never heard of named Yogi, and I thought he was also pretty good.

According to the prevailing “wisdom” on Bear Insider, you are the only Kal guy to think so.

I used to pause and watch my son and his friends play Madden.  After watching for a while, it occurred to me that most TV commentators were like the announcing in Madden.  They speak in generalities and trivialities.  Not a shred of insight can be gleaned from their droning sameness.  It's all canned.  Very rare to hear personalities like Keith Jackson and John Madden:

Brock Huard, ugh.  Takes himself way too seriously.  Moreover, provides generally hackneyed observations in this deeply intense voice that you know is his way of trying to sound worldly wise.

The polar opposite of the other former Univ. of Washington player turned commentator, the very down-to-earth Ed Cunningham.  Cunningham retired from broadcasting earlier this year because he no longer could stomach being part of a sport that promoted young men bashing their heads in. I thought Cunningham was the best in the college game, always informative and incisive, without being overbearing.  I miss his commentary, but respect the hell out of him for taking the stand that he did.

Why anyone would waste their time on that site is beyond my comprehension.

Yogi is definitely a guy I like (as well as Dave and Rod) in spite of where he coached.

Quote:Roth began his collegiate career as an athlete at the University of Pittsburgh where he walked on the football team, earning a full athletic scholarship as a wide receiver. He then began a coaching career on the staff of Pete Carroll at USC. After graduating magna cum laude and earning his master’s degree in communication management from the Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism, he rose through the coaching ranks, eventually becoming USC’s assistant Quarterbacks Coach. After four years on the USC coaching staff he transitioned to media, where he began a career as a college football analyst and host for ESPN, Fox and the Pac-12 Networks.

I like the (SC?) guy with the long last name, Petros Papadakis (?).  Always found him to be solid in his commentary/analysis, even if his voice is not out of central casting.

Re: Good News - Dave Fleming doing play-by-play for OSU game on ESPN - vataha - 10-26-2017

I am really impressed with Evan Moore of the Pac-12 Network. He is accurate, very knowledgeable and is dead on with his assessments. He also has a certain charisma.

Although not a TV personality Todd Husak is absolutely outstanding in his work on the radio.

Yes, Yogi Roth is very, very good.

I like him too. He can be very candid where most others would tread more carefully. So I appreciate him for that.

I think he's great! He has (had?) a radio show in LA that was syndicated by FOX Sports for a while. Lots of fun...lots of college football and to hear most of the syndicated sports talk, it's all NFL all the time.
