Royally pissed - lex24 - 11-19-2017

The more I think about SC getting a bye the madder I get. It is worth 7-10 points. Particularly given the fact that the opponent has a short week. And as bad as it would be for Stanford. It would be even worse for WSU.

SC was heavily favored to win the South. In fact they had no real challenge. So this was more than foreseeable. Consider that SC has the biggest national brand  and let the conspiracy theories fly

Anyone know how I get in email touch with that pathetic wretch of a so-called commissioner.  I’ll be gentle.

When you last pointed this out, I noted that in $C-land they are convinced that their schedule this year was a conspiracy AGAINST them (i.e. 12 games in a row with no bye, back to back road games on Saturday - Friday with the latter the difficult trip to Pullman, having to travel to South Bend after the "get beat up by Utah" game).

I think that it is difficult for this to have been a conspiracy against $C and a conspiracy to promote $C at the same time.

Re: Royally pissed - PAsportsfan - 11-19-2017

Wait, I'm confused. I thought having a bye week was bad for your next game? You know coming out "flat".
That was the excuse everyone used when Stanford played OSU.

Re: Royally pissed - MustardtheBallCarrier - 11-19-2017

Respectfully disagree.  I actually think it is a rather large disadvantage to have your bye either very early or very late in the season.  Moreover, the bye is not as helpful from a gameplanning perspective because SC won't know who they are playing for another week, and not like Stanford and WSU play remotely similar styles.

Re: Royally pissed - lex24 - 11-19-2017

No one should get a bye before a championship game. It is tremendously unfair.

Re: Royally pissed - lex24 - 11-19-2017

I don’t care about the game planning  aspect. It’s 12 days to rest vs 5. That should not happen in a Championship game.  They should be on equal footing. The only time one team should get a bye is when it earns it. As in NFL seedings.

In a championship game you want the playing field as level as possible. When one team gets an extra week to get healthier, it has a competitive advantage.

That should not be a difficult concept for a scheduler and a conference to understand.

Re: Royally pissed - dabigv13 - 11-19-2017

Most numbers I've seen show only a miniscule advantage for teams coming off a bye. I don't know where you're getting your 7-10 points, but I'm guessing you're pulling it out your backside.

The impact of the bye week is probably variable depending on a host of factors. I will definitely bitch about the SC advantage if we face them, but I don't think it makes a big difference.

Re: Royally pissed - lex24 - 11-19-2017

We disagree. More importantly shouldn’t a championship game be played on equal footing?  Why even schedule in such a manner that raised a question of an advantage to one team?

Let’s flip it. Say Stanford had it locked. Wouldn’t you want then to have a week off?  Rest their banged up players. No real risk of further injuries.

As for the 7-10 - yeah that’s my opinion. No way to prove it.

Re: Royally pissed - lex24 - 11-19-2017

I don’t care about regular season analysis. Post season is different. Why do you think the Top 2 NFL teams  in each conference get a bye?  Because it’s a disadvantage?  You EARN a bye post-season NFL.

SC didn’t earn this bye. But they get it. And you can disagree on the amount of the advantage or even if it is one.

But don’t you think the game should not have that as a potential issue?  Whoever wins the North should be on the same footing as whoever wins the South. It’s not particularly difficult to assure the regular season ends on the same weekend.

Frankly I don’t get how there is an argument against this.

Well, the NFL teams get a bye so they play one less game. Pretty important distinction.

And I'm not sure why postseason versus regular season should make a difference.

Probably much more relevant is the fact that the Champ Game is essentially a home game for us. That's definitely worth something. I'll take that over the bye.

Re: Royally pissed - lex24 - 11-19-2017

If you know any football coaches ask them this question: Going into a Championship game would you rather be the team that gets a week off and has 12 days to rest and prepare. Or the team that plays the week before and gets 5 days to rest and prepare.

And post season makes a difference because the stakes are higher. It is impossible in a regular-season schedule to avoid some inequities. The Friday night games for the traveling teams are an example  I think that was proven this year.  But it tends to even out schedule wise over the year.

Postseason is one game for a championship. And it’s easy to make certain that they go in on essentially the same footing.

A bye lets you rest your injured players. It's good you have many injured players. It's also good for  coordinators to devise schemes. I'm pretty sure the extra week helped Cal's defense last night.

Re: Royally pissed - Goose - 11-19-2017

All schedules are "unfair". No matter how they are constituted, some aspect of the schedule can be found that relatively disadvantages one team vs. another. While USC probably benefits from having a bye before the championship game, it could be argued that the 12 straight games increased their season ending injury total. It turned out that USC didn't need a bye (and the associated "benefits") to win the South. That wasn't a sure thing. Many have argued the loss to WSU was schedule related. There could have been other such losses. The season-ending bye does them no good if they aren't in the championship. I find it difficult to get to overwrought about it. Hopefully, we get to play them again and prove it doesn't matter!
