Heart and Love - cardcrimson - 12-01-2017

The commentators in the last few games kept mentioning that they've never seen anyone with such heart as Bryce Love. He can barely walk of the field, gets re-taped, and goes back in.

I have to agree. Bryce is the epitome of a warrior and team player. He gave it all over and over again and never quit. Truly inspirational and a fabulous role model. He's a pretty good running back, too.

Thank you Bryce Love.

I don’t think anyone will bat an eye if he decides to sit the bowl out. Rest and heal.

Re: Heart and Love - dabigv13 - 12-01-2017

Love really is a warrior. I can't recall another player doing what he did; playing on a gimp ankle for basically half the season, and still likely getting an invite to New York after putting up 1900+ yards and running for 50 yard TD runs on balls of tape for feet.

It may not be a brobdingnagian risk, but still playing on a sprained ankle can result in ligament laxity which makes you prone to future injury. He put his future on the line to play with his team. Probably my favorite Stanford player since Luck. I really hope he comes back like Luck did!

Agree on all counts.  What an incredible player.  Belongs right up there with Ernie Nevers playing on two broken ankles in the 1925 Rose Bowl against the Four Horsemen.

Re: Heart and Love - cctop - 12-02-2017

It hurt me physically to watch Love limp off the field, repeatedly.  At one point I felt like shouting, "Stay down!  Stay down!", just like Mick from Rocky.

I sprained my ankle about the same time that Love did.  Every couple of weeks all I do is step badly and I swear loud enough to make nearby mothers cover their children's ears.

I can barely imagine the amount of pain he was in.

Love definitely personified grit for the team.  But overall the whole team showed tremendous spirit this year.  Costello with the TD drive on a bad thumb is another example.  And just the way the team recovered from the 1-2 start and did what they needed down the stretch against tough competition to win the division.  Going down by 10 last night, and still finding a way to get the score closer and keep it a game until the 4th down in the final minute showed that they wouldn't give up until the very end.

Yes there are some personnel changes we should have made at different times, but to some extent hindsight is 20/20.  And yes if a couple plays here and there are executed a little better, we could be in the playoff.  But it's a college team; it's young players learning; that's always going to be the case.  The fact that this team was prepared to take their licks and learn from them and get better and fight to the last minute of the CCG makes me look back at this season as a plus.

According to the announcer Costello's thumb was hurt pretty early on, so it wasn't just that last drive, it was most of the game. Wonder if that contributed to the sub-par completion %.

Today's "Saturdays with Soltau" is up.

Quote:Shaw has run out of superlatives to describe the heroic play of junior running back Bryce Love. Playing on an injured ankle for six games, he delivered another gritty performance. Clearly hurting, Love rushed for 125 yards on 22 carries and contributed a 9-yard scoring run.

He gained 88 yards in the second half, including a 52-yard scamper.

It marked his FBS-leading 11th 100-yard game of the season, tying the Stanford single-season record. He has now recorded a nation-leading 12 runs of 50 or more yards, also an FBS record.

Love surpassed Toby Gerhart and moved into second place on the school's single-season rushing list with 1,973 yards. With a bowl game remaining, he needs 47 yards to catch all-time leader Christian McCaffrey (2,019).

"Let's just say this, I don't have a Voldemort vote, so I'm not going to talk about those who do," said Shaw. "They can vote whoever they want. What's he's done on one leg is unheard of.

"If people can vote their conscience, that's fine. I don't care. I put my arm around this guy and put him up in front of anybody, not to mention what he does academically. Bryce is a young man that you want college football to be about, and you want to point to and say, to my two young sons, 'Be like him.' "
